My first hog

My first hog - 05/09/16 08:43 PM

I have been hunting on our recently acquired property to try and get rid of these things, and I finally got a clean shot at one. Made the most out of it. Can't tell from the pic, but it was a pretty decent size piggee. Not the biggest I've seen, but none of them seem to be small.

And so starts the addiction. May God have mercy on your soul.

Oh, and Good job!

Nice shootin'. We shoot every hog we can get a shot at. I killed 41 hogs on our place last year. My neighbor to the west shot 140, neighbor on the east trapped over 60. Didn't make dent in them. Just thought you might want an idea of what you're up against.
Keep shooting!!!

Will do. Shot him right next to a trap they won't go in. Only far enough in to eat corn about 1' in. So shooting seems to be the only way. Lucky for us, we are seeing very few on the cameras, so hoping to get them eliminated (well, as best you can anyway).

Might try a figure 6 trap, can look those up and see how they are made and work, but if they spoon of a regular box reap the figure 6 might get them in there...

Good job! It is fun, but the experts say you need to shoot 75% of them
Just to stay on pace with them. It will be a never ending fight.

Nothing wrong with that! I aim for an eye hole or an ear hole. Both easy access to gray matter. Nice pig! up

Re: My first hog - 05/16/16 09:09 PM

Congrats!! That looks like a bruiser. You know you don't have to kill em all. I think they are nice to have around. If there's no crops to worry about I think they are a blessing. They are great to eat and you can hunt them however you please. They can be very challenging once you educate them. Just enjoy. They can be tough to clean but really rewarding to eat. Get em quartered in a cooler and drop a cup of baking soda and a half a cup of salt in there. Let the ice melt to a slurry. Three or four days in this solution will tenderize the meat and take away any stink:)
Then I usually just cook the straps on the grill and grind the rest. It's really hard to beat.
