Wanting to bag my first Hog. - 11/29/15 05:32 AM

I'm just getting into hunting and want to get some field practice...where is a good place to go and bag my first hog. I would be ok to pay a little something .. But nothing crazy. I'm in Royse City, TX...about 30 miles east of Dallas. Any info would be great..thanks

I'm gonna second colt.45's recommendation. Read Fearless Hogs and then get a guided hunt or go with an experienced hunter. You can get yourself in a pickle otherwise.

Appreciate the advise .. Yes safety is also key .. Any recommendations on public lands.. That would be a preference .. I did look at Hunters Creek in Mt. Vernon.. Looks good, but eels less like hunting .. But that's probably my ambition thinkng I'm a veteran in the hunting game .. Since I'm not a seasoned pro I think I may start there. Any advise on which public lands? I'd be interested in at least going and walking the areas

Have ya got your $48.00 permit for Public Hunting Land? Think their might be a few, LBJ, Caddo National Grassland, might be free, not too far from Royse City , haven't been ta them... Caddo Lake WMA, think ya need the permit... Ones i've been too, Tawakoni has 3 small area's, Pawnee being biggest, ya have Lake Cooper, White Oak WMA & my ta-go-to place OSBWMA for hog hunts... Just ta name few.. huntsolo mostly myself, then, as pappy say's: tis bout as bright as a burnt out light bulb ... If hunten ta grill & chill tis nice ta have a friend... i use light back pac confused2 few times are they close ta truck... Safe hunten... flag

Yeah .. I'm going to go out to Cooper either way.. Never been there and I like being out doors regardless.. Probably do an over night there for hack of it .. Wanted to about a month ago but they had the burn ban in effect still .. Funny what a little rain will do .. I'll try and get info as well .. Will share as it might have some value .. Thanks for the Intel ..

Could try hunting the wild in mount Vernon also. Kayle is great guy, would have to pay to hunt though. Other than the public stuff. Texas is a pay and play kinda state. Unless you know people. Might think of finding a lease. Always fun to watch stuff change for the better because you had the chance to help it along. Good luck. Welcome to the forum.

Cooper doesn't open for another month. You also might want to get your feet wet before you go there. In my experience, hogs there are quite aggressive. It's also full of water moccasins, so you'll need snake-proof boots or gaiters.

I almost bet he will never go to the public land. But I might be wrong. Really sounds like he wants a free hunt. Maybe I am wrong.
