Remington 223 Hog Hammer Ammo

Remington 223 Hog Hammer Ammo - 02/09/15 08:07 PM

New here so I figured I'd start a post and get hazed early. I've been hog hunting once, with a buddy, who loaned me his AR15. Didn't see anything. So I have zero experience. I always assumed 223 was good enough to take hogs with. Well years go by of course and because of my job (military), I haven't been able to get back out in the field. I only have my AR15s for now, and I'm due a hunt when I get back stateside in a few weeks.

So knowing the backstory, has anyone used this ammo before?

Is it decent?

Did I just set myself up for a tounge lashing for saying 223 and hogs in the same sentence?

Thanx,
Inked

ANY ammo will work if placed right. Welcome to forum.

It's a 62 grain Barnes TSX bullet. Should work wonders on pigs.

That being said, I've also had good luck with your basic 55gr soft point ammo too.

welcome to the THF and thanks for your service

Lots of pigs get made into BBQ material with the 223. Put those bullets in the right place and enjoy.

Shot placement is the key, .223 will do the job. Thank you for your service and welcome to the forum.

Thanks folks, I appreciate it. Even though I love buying new guns, I don't want to drop a ton of dough on a couple new rifles for me and my Old Lady right now. Hunts are gonna cost enough.

I tried some in my bolt-action .223 and got terrible accuracy. Bullets were all over the target. Make sure your .223 has the proper twist to stabilize the heavier bullets. Mine shoots great with 55-gr bullets but anything heavier - forget it!

As far as hunting pigs, put a bullet in the correct spot and then pork for dinner.

That's what I have been reading. 1/8 or better twist. My S&W AR has a 1/8, while my woman's Black Forge has a 1/7. We will see how it goes!

Welcome!

I actually picked up alot of basic info for my hog hunting from THF. Alot of helpful people on here will give you lots of good info to start with.

I've seen .223 drop a big boar with one shot, in what I would have thought to be the worst place to shoot one that big (through the shoulder). And I've dropped several average sized ones with it. Neck or head if possible will do it everytime.

I do however shy away from ammo with the remington name. I've seen some really bad accurracy issues from it (all over the map!), and just don't trust it now.

I like the Winchester Razorback if you can find 'em in .223. Over $20 a box, but the stuff is devastating, and I've never had accurracy problems with it. Gotta be careful using it on piglets though. Sometimes it leaves a bigger back door than you would want on it's way out.

I've also used cheap FMJ's (American Eagle, box of 150 for between $60-$89.99 depending on where, and if they are running a sale) in 62 gr I think they are. They work great too, and accurracy on them has been great for me on two different rifles.

In fact, I sight in with the American eagle FMJ's, and then load my clips with both the American Eagles, and Razorbacks, alternating every bullet in the clip till full.

GL on your hunt!

Thank you for putting your life on the line for our country!!

If you are trained in 223/556 then might as well stick with it. The best weapon for pigs is an AR. It is quick to target and easy for follow ups.

Bullets dont matter much when you thump them in the head.

Alternating bullets is a good ideathat I do also. Right now I have the same 223 Rem hog hammer mixed with IDI 64gr FMJ's. Best of both worlds!

I will look into the different varieties of ammo. I noticed that the razorback is a little more expensive. But both the Remington and Winchester are near $30 a box. I will probably pick some up and shoot both. More time on the range means a more succesful shot in the field. Besides, I just wanna shoot.

Welcome, and thx for your service.
Any bullet that shoots accurate in your gun (except thin-jacketed varmint bullets) should be good for hogs.
Wild pork is a bit leaner than store-bought and mighty fine eating cooked up right.

It absolutley is. Since I missed Deer season (not that I could afford that anyways), I'm going for some wild pork. Buddy of mine who was an avid Hog Hunter in SC cooked me up some. I miss it.

I think that if you are using a 5.56, that would be a great choice of ammo. Especially for head shots.

I'm also thinking about picking up some 6.8 uppers which would would be cheaper than buying new rifles. We will see. flag

Alot will depend on the range of shot taken, type of rest, standing prone, sitting with rest. Have used cheap .223 55gr & have great success. Shot placement is key. Best wishes. Safe return flag

Range time before we go! rifle

Re: Remington 223 Hog Hammer Ammo - 02/21/15 10:58 PM

I personally think the .223 is a little lightweight for hogs, but there are a LOT of folks who use them and like them. I owned one for a while but sold it and bought an AR-10, which I think is MUCH better.

Still, if I had an opportunity to go hog hunting, and all I had was an AR-15, I'd use it.

I'd recommend the heaviest soft point ammo that the rifle can accurately shoot. Don't worry about premium bullets.

The above is all merely my opinion.

Hey, if I didnt want opinions, I wouldnt have come on a public forum..

I'm thinking about getting some 6.8 uppers. But once again, it comes down to financials.

I'm going with shot placement is what is key. So it breaks down to range time. flag aim

find a a good bullet that shoots well out of your AR, sight in learn how to shoot a hog practice and go hunting, that being said the 6.8 and AR 10 would be my first choice if I had them, if you get a 6.8 in future I highly recommend 120 grain hornady, or 115 federal fusion. the 6.8 gives a bit more knock down and bigger margin of error, I have seen uppers on palmetto state armory for as little as 300.00, also on 223 read reviews on federal 62 grain fusion I have not used them in 223 but they are awesome in 6.8, reviews are good in 223 if your guns like them, with 223 I would try and keep shots inside 100 yards 150 at most, when using 223 I mostly shoot hornady softpoints because of price, had good luck on small meat hogs. I live only miles from areas I get to hunt, and usally use 223 when after meat pig, if I was going on a paid or invited hunt, I would look into some tough bullets, good luck to u and your wife on upcomeing hog hunt, and thank you sir for your service to our country. yall keep us free to do the things we love,

Old age got nothen ta do with it. rofl i'm a whimp. First deer rifle was .45 Kentucky less kick than the .50cal. Whin went modern .270 instead of the 30.06 it still knocks the chit outta me & years of open sight shooting was always relaxed. First time shooting with scope was a real eye opener. Health problems, got a few, dont do no good ta complain. So basicly use .223 for hogs & .243 deer. Short range, eyes not what usedta br. bang dang scopes. Best thing use what feel comfertable with. flag
