Vitamins and Supplements!

Vitamins and Supplements! - 08/31/16 12:35 PM

One of the young ladies on my team; she brings in a bag of supplements and takes them all day.

She swears it makes her feel better.

What supplements do yall take if any? Do you take a daily Multi? My Dr. said I should, so I do. But all the studies I have seen show they dont do anything. But I follow Drs orders.

Used to take a bunch of stuff to try and prevent migraines, recommended by my neurologist. I'm slowly just growing out of them and I just quit taking everything, including a multivitamin. I feel no different and life is simpler (and cheaper).

Who knows if they work, and many you buy are scams. I hear Costco has the most real vitamins per what is on the label.

I only take a sublingual Vitamin B12 daily.

I used to take a MultiVatimin from GNC it made my urine bright yellow, I took it for 3 years daily and then switched to a Costco Multi vitamin for couple years. Quit taking multi vitamin and never could tell difference.

I was taking fish oil for about 90 days. I had read it could help with blood pressure.

I check mine regularly and it did nothing.

Its so strange that all the studies show eating the fish is good because of the Omega3 but once they extract the oils and put it in pill form it does almost nothing.... at least not much that can be proved in studies.

Lots of studies have proven most men really only need 3 supplements:
magnesium, Vitamin D & omega 3.
You can buy these individually very cheap. Nature Made would be a quality & cheap brand that I'm sure makes all 3.

Re: Vitamins and Supplements! - 09/03/16 03:00 AM

I've done extensive personal research into vitamins and supplements. The ones I have found that work best to fit my personal need are:

25mg Zinc daily- most people are zinc deficient due to poor dietary habits. I work in the medical field also so I'm around sick people all the time. Zinc has been shown to interfere with the ability of a virus to replicate, that includes cold and flu virus. I can't say conclusively that the following is due to my zinc supplement, but I haven't had either in almost 5 yrs now.

1000 MG Krill oil with 4 MG asthaxanthin - krill oil is a more potent way to get your omegas due to the fact that omegas in krill are bound to phospholipids instead of cholesterol as they are in fish oil. All krill oil has some asthaxanthin (less than 1mg/1000mg) I choose one that has some more added. Asthaxanthin is a potent antioxidant.

Ubiquinol 100mg- this is essentially coenzyme Q10, but in a form that is more readily absorbed by your body. Studies have shown that after age 30 our bodies have a reduced capacity to both produce and convert coenzyme Q10 to ubiquinol so that it can be used. I'm well over 30, so I take this instead of coQ10. If you take statins for your cholesterol you should be taking this since statins reduce your bodies ability to make coQ10 naturally.

I don't take a multi but if I we're going to it would be either the sams club or Costco "mature" multi vit. They have both consistently tested as top quality and performance multis.

Magnesium should be coming from leafy greens in your diet. Vitamin D should be coming from diet and a little time in the sun.

I workout fairly regular, not as much add is like to our should. Strength training is the key to getting the most from a workout. High intensity is the cornerstone of making your strength training workout provide you the most health benefit. I do my entire routine with one 55lb barbell in 4-5 sets that take 5 minutes each. Not heavy weight, but there are no breaks between exercises so the intensity is high during the entire 5 minutes. Any Cardio I get is in the form of outdoor activity mountain biking, long walks, or kayaking.

Vitamins and supplements are a long term strategy. You shouldn't take them and expect to feel immediate change. Think of them more as aids to add time to your life and better health in the long term.

Got kind of long, but functional medicine is something I'm really into. If you are going to take vitamins and supplements you should really do your research and target specific supplements you need to reach your goals. And of course consult your doctor, cuz these are mostly unregulated but potentially very potent.

You are probably correct. We don't live in a 3rd world country where we have limited food.

They sure make a killing off vitamins

Re: Vitamins and Supplements! - 09/08/16 05:16 PM

I drink C4 ripped as my preworkout and BPI BCAA's during my workout. I really like both. Other than that I take a little fish oil and B-12.

Oh, and Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey when I need a protein shake. The extreme milk chocolate flavor is awesome.

Re: Vitamins and Supplements! - 10/24/16 08:51 PM

I use fish oil for my joints. It really helps but I also lift weights religiously so I need joint support. I take glutamine for muscle health. Any other vitamins I get from eating food. All of my protein comes from food. I take creatine too along with other BCAA's during workout. I can't take whey proteins cause all store bought protein makes me stay close to the john. Drink a lot of water every day.
