Old knife with rust

I have an old knife that was given to me. It's hand made and has a little rust and nicks on the blade. What's the best way to get the rust off? I tried a Brillo pad and had some success....anything better? I have a lot of wood working tools but not a lot of Metal working tools.

What about the nicks? Just wet stone over and over? Seems like that would take a long time....I also have an angle grinder or dremel but I'm afraid to ruin it.

Be nice to find a knife maker close to you. I've cleaned up several for friends with a scotch brite belt on my 2x72 grinder and took out chips in less than two minutes. Get on the Texas Knifemakers Guild website directory and look for someone in your area. I'm pretty sure you can find someone that will knock it out for you at no cost. Most of us knife makers are pretty nice guys. roflmao
