Always been told Kerr is a outstanding place to hunt and with that kinda luck I'd be buying Lottery Tickets for some really BIG $'s about now.

Just checked on my Application List....and ... out of 13 Applications I got 10 locations listed as "Not Drawn". Most of them have 6 LP's. The other 3 locations are shown as "Application Received" , with 21 LP's at South Llano River, and Kerr & Mason Mtn pending. Ah yes just like the old days after all. Need to pick out a couple places within doable reach for Stand By I guess.

Many years ago I traveled thru Kerrville on a regular basis with a 5 state territory. I hope this place is still open called Farah's I think it was. OUTSTANDING food does not do it completely. A customer of mine back then was the Dept Store downtown, if it's still there ya gotta see the sheer number of awesome mounted deer heads that ring the ceiling to believe it ..over a 100 as I recall. Let me win a decent sized 6+ figure Lottery and I'm GTG and move to Kerrville for sure.

The folks in charge of the hunt will assign you a compartment. There is a few exotics out there but they are trying to shoot them out of the place to focus on native animals. Bring corn and alfalfa. You should not have a problem getting a doe. A management buck could be tough due to the criteria, but by no means impossible. Lots of good bucks out there and a few monsters. Very fun hunt. They put stands in the compartments for you and they are in good enough locations to hunt. Mid morning walking hunts are fun too. Good luck

Hunted Kerr around 5 years ago. I held out for a big buck and did not harvest. However the hunt was a success. I could have killed a dumb 3 year old 10 that would score around 130 but the deer had too much potential and my friend that got picked with me killed a high, narrow 10 that scored 130. An hour after he dropped that deer a bigun north of 160 walked out, ate corn and bedded 80 yards from where my buddy was sitting. He sent me a crappy phone pic of the deer. I was hunting about 3/4 mile from him around a big hill that had a well travelled shelf leading from my area to his. This good chance at seeing the 160 had me hold out. I did not see any exotics nor did anyone else during the hunt. I had an opportunity to kill a woolbooger of a boar. Had 4+ inch cutters(I don't lie about hogs) but it was within last 15 minutes of legal shooting light second day and I had that young 10 and some scrub bucks chasing doe in front of me, I knew of the big 160 too, so it was everything I could do not to drop that boar! If you are a hunter you will have ample opportunity to kill your doe and most likely a management deer. The staff know exactly where all the deer live on that place and can direct you as best they can. After all you are helping them manage the place as they want those deer culled off the place. It is one of the better hunts I've been on and have been on a lot of TPWD hunts. Also did turkey out the one year and got a decent gobbler. You will have fun no matter what. If you need a place to stay we stayed in a room at the Camp Waldemar Baptist encampment just down the road from Kerr. They may still rent rooms out and it was a nice setting.

Thanks for all the info sounds like we will have a good hunt and fill the freezer. We booked a room at the MO ranch it's supposed to be pretty close to the hunting area.

I drew the either sex hunt there in 2018. As mentioned earlier, you will be assigned a compartment. When I hunted there you drove yourself to and from your compartment. Most compartments have multiple blinds. I drove the compartment early the first day to get a feel for the layout. I did not see any exotics on the Kerr but seen lots of them driving out there. Almost hit a big axis driving back into down one evening. I seen one good deer come out about 300 yards away and really didn't have a shot. Seen a group of pigs on 2nd day but close to prime shooting time so didn't shoot any. Seen lots of turkey's that enjoyed the corn I put out. I didn't see any doe's. I ended up taking a big spike the last morning. There weren't any huge deer taken during the hunt. A couple guys who drew one of the compartments a little further in to wma said he drove by the deer pens and said they had a lot of deer in the pens. I suspect they know exactly what is running around in each compartment.

I stayed at the campsite at mo ranch and nearly froze when it got down to 18 degrees that night. That was also for the 2018 ES hunt. I ended up taking a decent 8 around 18" wide.

My son got drawn last year for the management hunt, Nov 23-25, and luckily the first thing that showed up the first evening was a 3 pointer which qualified for management, however we only saw one doe the next 2 days while walking back to the blind after lunch; there weren't a lot of deer taken, but I'm unsure of the count.
They had just opened their new facilities, awesome as can be, with a powered hoist so they get your deer from your truck and then just move to your skinning station and cooler, all without you having to lift it.
As for exotics, I asked and was told they had not seen any in a few years, we did bring alfalfa hay and cubes but no exotics showed up; I don't recall the compartment number but I've attached a screenshot of the location of the blinds we had available.
We also stayed at Mo Ranch, super convenient, as mentioned it can get cold, we stayed at a campground, not a cabin, basically a screened-in shelter.

Re: Got drawn for Kerr - 09/30/21 08:40 PM

It was back in 96 and 97 I got drawn on archery hunts there and then drawn on a rifle hunt in 97 also. It was a long time ago but it was the same time frame as your hunt this year. Last part of October for archery and I saw very few deer in the two pastures I hunted. One was in the NE corner and around 200 acres and the other was the pasture the deer research pens are in. I did see a few bucks in that pasture. First week of December for rifle and the deer were in full rut. I hunted the pasture the research pens were in and saw quite a few deer and axis bucks. I rattled for WT but never got any to come to the horns but had 3 different axis bucks come to horns over the hunt. I finally shot the last one on a late morning hunt. I did grunt in 8 bucks the last morning, so a grunt call might come in handy. I would try to rattle for axis since it worked for me. The pastures all have about the same amount of deer but they water troughs are not distributed the same. Each pasture has water it might be on the edge though. They were doing a lot of habitat work back then and opening up the WMA as they could.

Had a great time at Kerr hunting with my son,we both got a doe, didn't see a spike but a couple were taken by other hunters.saw a couple nice bucks got a picture of one that came out with the does. The skinning shed was great, electric hoist picks em up right out the truck bed and on around to a rail where you hang and skin.Staff was very helpful and great to visit with.Stands were all great and in good spots to see deer. Stayed at MO Ranch very nice place but no phones or TV so pretty quiet around there.Great hunt I'd go back if drawn again. [Linked Image]

Man that’s awesome, I put in for a ton of draws this year, but haven’t been picked for any. One day I’ll get lucky

This was only my second time being drawn in eleven or twelve years of entering.
