Are kept graded or do you need a 4x4?

If you hunt the areas around Ladonia, south of the larger plots north of Honey Grove...an airboat with wheels under it would work IMO much better when it rains even a little bit. The hunt areas just south of the South Sulphur River is a mud bog with even a heavy dew fall. BTDT

Main roads are fine. You're not supposed to get off road at either area. So to answer your question, no, you do not need 4x4.

The WMA areas down south around Ladonia are all isolated patches of GVT ground, ranging in size from couple hundred acres to much larger. They are not all contiguous and have dirt NON PAVED access from some of the paved county roads or TX FM roads. Trust me YOU WILL Most certainly need 4x4's unless you plan on walking in 1/2 mile to several miles just to reach the access points. Find the Grass Lands office in Decatur and buy their excellent maps for the current updated straight skinny on these areas.

The areas around Coffee Mill & Davy Crockett lakes have a TX DOT maintained hwy thru the middle of it, and those dirt roads inside that area are usually behind locked gated, with walk around access points on most of them. There is an area way up north east above the Work Station that is one of the most miserable difficult access areas I know of, and haven't been up there in years ...but it is isolated and wilder than a march hare the last time I saw it.

I;ve never been on the WMA areas down around Decatur...toooo many waay too many people and they need to establish parking by reservation with a valet service, but have hunted and fished the ground up north & south of Honey Grove since the early '60's, when I was in college at Commerce and had a frat brother from Honey Grove who introduced me to the area.

FWIW I'd WEAR ORANGE anytime I was on the ground after Sept 1st, whether I was hunting or not...lots of MetroMess DA yahoos up there in the past and the easy access areas are always knee deep in people who don't know the butt from the bore...and the locals are not always repectful of the property lines in maintaining their fences or keeping their live stock OFF GVt land or who owns the property.

Wear Snake boots or chaps too anytime you are outside of the vehicle anywhere on the property 365 days a year. Lake Davy Crockett has some of the biggest cottonmouths I ever saw...bigger than Tawakoni's too. Crappie fishing one time at Crockett's big reed bed in the middle of the lake and had a cottonmouth big as my forarm wrapped around my crappe basket, looking for a freebie...until I picked it up to put a fish in it, and he slid down my leg until my pard beat a leak in the bottom of a Ouachita brand commercial John boat, breaking his back that only slowed him down enough to flip him over board...used to be great crappie fishing in that lake too.

I hunted 15 years on Private along Bois'dark creek bordering Caddo grasslands. Killed many a cotton mouth and have stopped mid stride while looking down the white mouth of a cotton mouth that I disturbed....more times than I care to remember. Never ever did I were snake boots or chaps. Snakes just don't bother me. Killed several Eastern turkeys on Caddo over the years also. Snakes no problem.

I didn’t see a single whitetail at Caddo in person last season...
