New to Texas...Need some help...NOT asking for your spot! - 01/30/18 08:20 PM

Just moved to the Houston area from out of state. Looking for some public land to turkey hunt so I looked through the TPWD information online in their interactive map but was confused because all of the WMA's I clicked on didn't have turkey hunting rules listed but had it for other game. Does this mean that no turkey hunting is allowed in these places or does they follow the rules for the county the WMA is in?

Also, definitely not looking for anybody to give up their spots - I don't mind doing my own homework/legwork but any advice on where NOT to go would be appreciated! I know how certain public spots were in other states I lived - would rather not get shot at!

Not just looking at the Houston area so ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

Look into the TPWD draw hunts later this year in July. You can also look at a TPWD Annual Hunting Permit for more areas to hunt. welcome

welcometa texasHF. up on the zig, slinger have gun will travel, ol western tv western show.
83 was a newbie ta texas hunting lease is the big thing here, different than back home. Hog hunten what got me on them. After years of leasing the opened up a WMA public hunting land just down the road. Gave up lease, had several acres ta hunt behind house, but majority of hunting was at various WMAs. Back then it was $40.00 permit & ya got booklet with places ta hunt & regulations for each.
Things have changed since then, several no longer exist, got some new, most info is online, not sure if still give out booklets & price went up $48.00
Have seen several places that offered Turkey hunts, my old books still in texas. Talked ta several hunters at OSBWMA bout Turkey hunts, they were helpful. They released several turkeys at OSBWMA when first opened ta public, flooding pushed them out. Used the general hog hunts, ta learn the area for my archery deer hunts, all the signs, (rubs scrapes, rails, bedding, food source) were still visible & found sheds. Gives ya chance ta facilities yourself with area. Hog hunts were easy, with the 24-7-365 pressure of surrounding privet land, WMA had limited pressure, making it good hunting, if ya put in the time & effort, as pappy says: "do it yourself hunts" . Best wishes.

I've recently started to look for public land for a weekend turkey hunt come april/may. I'm just looking through the APH handbook, and checking for public land thats in nearby regions. From what I've seen, you're gonna have to at least drive 3-4hrs and get closer to Louisiana for some turkey on public. Also, if you're curious about seasons you can always download the Texas Outdoor Annual app for your phone. It has all the seasons, map of public lands, etc. The public lands that allow you to hunt turkey will definitely mention it.
