Trash in SHNF

Trash in SHNF - 01/02/16 06:53 PM

When I say trash, I mean that literally and figuratively. As in the trash all over and the trashy people who leave it there. I got here a little over 2 hrs ago, and on the walk in to my favored spot, I was disappointed to see cigarette wrappers, papers, balloons some d-bag apparently used to mark his spot, a discarded camo hat and even a plastic Academy bag full of more trash that someone just tossed in a hole.

I spent a good 30 minutes gathering it up and taking it back to my truck. I just couldn't bear to spend the next two days sitting amid someone else's crap. I don't expect that a THF member did this, but if so, let me know who you are and I'll tell you exactly where you can go to claim your $hit.

OK, rant over. I'll let you know if I actually shoot something.

H, I, for one, appreciate your rant! If more THF members would report on stuff like this, public lands would be better places to hunt. I only hunt public lands, so it really ticks me off to see 'em trashed. Thankfully, to be honest, I don't really see too much in the areas I frequent, at least when I get a few yards beyond the parking areas.

Good luck down there, check your six, and keep us posted!

There's really no need to report it as the bulk of it is right up at the highway at the forest road entrances. I guess the forest service doesn't have enough money to clean it up. As for trash in the forest itself, I, for years, carried a plastic bag in with me and picked up any trash I found. It's been collecting for decades and I learned that the areas I cleaned up stayed clean.

Oh, I didn't mean reporting it to authorities, necessarily, but on this and other forums.

The trash bag is a good idea, postoak...

Here's the garbage after I combined it all together. I'm hoping I'll be rewarded for my good deed. I don't believe in karma, but maybe the deer do smile .

Nothing else happening here so far.

It's a true shame that people can't pick up their own trash one of my favorite fishing holes would be covered in trash everytime I went I would clean it up in a few weeks do it over agian.
I went fishing with a freind and he saw me pick some trash out of the water and put it in the boat, he asked if it was my trash I said no he said in that case your welcome to come fishing with me agian

Well, I hope you kill something.

I'll never be able to wrap my head around that level of laziness and apathy.

My kids were misbehaving one day so I took em to some public land in n texas. I got a huge leaf bag trash bag and made em pick up empty shotgun shells for 2hrs. People leave their garbage everywhere. I try to help clean it up, try to teach my kids to be respectful, and if you dont, well dad's got some interesting forms of punishment for you.

What's baffling to me is, for the trash to get there, someone had to carry it in, right? And it would have been a lot heavier when it was a full beer can, beef jerky package, water bottle, shotgun shell, etc. So if they can carry that stuff in, why can't they carry it out when it's empty and lighter?

Thanks, but it was a complete shutout. At least I picked nice weather for sitting in the woods all day.

I agree people doing this stuff just don't care. I used to hunt some public land in Anderson county that had so much trash dumped on it (mostly beer cans and food wrappers) that it looked like a frat house just had a beer bash. I used to pick up quite a bite when I was there but it just got to a point where it was a losing battle.

Yep. It's a combination of both. Lazy and apathetic. Might as well add worthless to the mix.

Your time is coming. Keep on keepin' on.

Not sure what that'll accomplish, colt, but I guess they could put a face to the offender! I, of course, wouldn't hassle anybody about dumping trash in person since I have no idea how they'll react; Snickers wrappers and beer cans aren't worth getting shot over!

Helped get em out... scratch Does that make me an acsessory ta the fact ? not good with big words... Re: Trash in SHNF - 02/07/16 07:00 PM

To make matters worse, here in Texas we have relatively few options for public access hunting. I met a kid (I dont know his age but I do know he presented like a kid) who was out with a shotgun just jacking rounds into the tree line at the LBJ Grasslands, not even aiming at anything. I asked him politely what he was hunting and he says "oh I dont hunt here I have a lease... I just come here to shoot." Needless to say on my way out, I had to pick up every one of his spent shells. What a class act. Another time I went out and found a dead pit bull and a dead hog just laying right there in the parking lot amid beer cans, the epitome of waste and abuse. I would have prefer that hunter leave his gun and his hunting license there in the mud. Speaking of mud, that sort of behavior drags our entire community right through it. Its just all sad to me to sit here and think about. Infuriating really. Something positive to think about, I would be glad to meet any number of you for a trash hunt at LBJ. I can provide one brisket, you provide some refreshments and we can make an event of it. Prize for the heaviest bag. Its something I've thought over for a while. The kids could learn alot from seeing their elders come together to take care of our community land.

welcome ta texasHF cheers on the nidea will it solve the problem though ? See a lot of complaints about Public Hunting Lands... This thread first of trash ... See others of vandalizm, crack houses, just ta name a few... Sad thing is 99% of the ones that hunt WMA are just out thar ta enjoy time spent, & chance ta do some grillen & chillen... Not every one can aford high prices of leases, did that, done that, been thar... flag

Re: Trash in SHNF - 03/13/16 02:26 PM

I taught my kids to ALWAYS leave a place looking better than it did when you arrived. When we went camping just before we left everyone got a plastic bag and picked up everything that was left by other people. Cig butts, can tabs, everything. They all still do this and have their kids doing the same. I'm proud of them for passing on the right way to do things.

Re: Trash in SHNF - 03/14/16 08:14 PM

I was dove hunting at a public hunting spot a few years ago, and hadn't see a dove for a long time, but I heard a ton of shooting on the other end of the property. From the sounds, I could tell there were a couple different sizes of shotguns. When the shooting died down, I saw two dads with a kid each (probably 10 to 12 years old) walking toward the parking area. I was please to see dads taking their kids hunting. But then I walked to the area where they had been and I saw a giant mess. There were soda cans and food wrappers all over the place, and most of the cans were peppered with shotgun pellet holes. There were 12, 20, and .410 shotgun shells scattered al over. I walked back to my truck and brought a trash bag back and filled it up. I guess my good deed was rewarded, because on the way back to my truck, a few doves flew overhead and I got a rare double. One shot, two birds, and yes, I picked up my brass.
If I had caught up with the folks who were there earlier, I would have told them I appreciated the dads teaching their sons about hunting, but they should have also taught them about being good sportsmen, including policing their areas.

Re: Trash in SHNF - 03/15/16 09:32 PM

cheers Made a living. as clean- up person at foundry, lifestyle day was actualy 24 house, cleaned up machine bye my self, sand system, like I did every day as set upman, then when other machines went down back in hole cleaning up... Twas a tax right off ta them, & always heard how bad times are & we don't make money off clean up... Yet, with my limited Yankee wisdom, ya figure the price of clean-up in with price of product... All i got was alien body parts... You doing better than me... Good thread, my hog hunts usualy one shot, i problely missed a couple rounds... flag
Edit: hunters were the eyes & ears at WMA ... Back when they did sign in... They asked for licence plates... Like every thing else they've gone high-tech cameras monitor.... That place may not have it yet, funding is tight.... Just like cost of internet, be loosing that soon... Like hunting & fishing never did make money off it.... Best wishes.... flag

It is sad but true. Same goes for popular public fishing places for white bass (or any fish). Once the masses reach, the garbage accumulates. Thumbs up for taking the time to pick up after others.

It's sad. Kudos to you for going above and beyond. Even on my private place each new flood brings me more trash to pick up.
