Sam Houston National Forest - 11/29/15 03:26 PM

I am interested in possibly giving hunting in the National Forest a try. Anyone else done this? I looked for info on TWPD website but it was pretty confusing. What needs to be done and is it too late for this year? Anyone have any tips?

Thanks!

hunted there about 5 years ago on opening weekend. At the time you needed a doe tag from park service to shoot does they had limited amount which were free. I believe you also needed state access tag which lets you hunt on public access properties. Hunted 3 days and a friend and I both scored on small bucks. we were meat hunting and were successful

Yep. Need public huntin permit for $48. No does or antlerless can be shot unless you have a permit which is too late to get (by lotto in july I think) I got a spike there a few weeks ago. Even opening weekend I didnt see a bunch of other hunters...granted the weather was bad and I hiked back quite a bit off the beaten path

I got drawn for Antler-less there this year. Never been and searching for hunting reports has been a rare find. Its a pretty large area but a friend and I are thinking for going down that way in a couple of weeks to scout out a couple areas. Who knows, may come back with meat, may come back with the same bullet count as headed there.

In two days there I saw seven deer and one hog. It shouldnt be hard to get at least a doe if they are still moving. Lota of good info on this site on how to better your chances. I hear there are aome monster bucks but if you hunt 100 yards off the road your chances may be slimmer.

Btw, is it legal to walk the pipelines while hunting?

Im not sure about the pipeline but im pretty sure you need to be 100 yards off any trail.

You can walk anywhere you want but you have to be 140 yards away from the pipeline to be able to take a shot and that shot can not be in the direction of the pipeline

I drove by Caney creek yesterday on 1375 and the hogs had tore up all of the grass on both sides of the hwy there.

I think I found a new hoggin spot for when deer season is over.

cheers Wish could be thar ta tag-a-long... rofl Skipper & Gilligan go hunten... My mind wonders... Years of archery deer&hog hunten on OSBWMA when it first opened ta public... Old ATV trails were covered with sign... Used ta follow good trail of the ATV trails & set up by thick areas, that were tore up... Would sit for hours, days, weeks, without slinging an arrow... Would see some moving out of bow range or hear em in distance & put on stalk... Shoulder problems made my drawing back too much movement... Had video in different thread, were after videoing hogs, one walked right up ta me... Not saying in all cases, but majority of hog movement was done at night... Best luck twas the general any legal means hog hunts... Hitting the thick out of way areas... Lots of pudding one foot in front of other... If found were hogs tore up, check by kicking lose ground up next too rooted area, difference in color of dirt, tell freshness at times... End of deer season hogs might be in different area, for food supply & pressure... Best Wishes &
Safe hunten... flag

Im a seasoned hunter and in 3 years of going 1-3 times a year ive had One good opportunity on a buck and can count on two hands how many times ive seen deer. Maybe im not very good at hunting? I could admit that if it were the case, but i've killed deer on other public lands with a bow, surely i should have gotten something at sam houston with a gun. It just seems like I never see much sign, you'll run across some tracks every now and then, but ive never found places that were just 'torn up' with sign, like i see other places. Maybe im hunting in the wrong area because its definitely not for lack of effort. With that being said I still enjoy hunting there, the camping is great and its a really beautiful forest.
