Hunting the OSBWMA - 11/27/15 03:50 PM

confused2 Has any one been hunting it ? White Falcon been giving some reports on the river & his leases bordering the North... No reports of archery hunts, nor draw hunts... Do know Hoard Rd was closed ta traffic, couple of weeks ago do to flooding... The 3 month any legal means hog hunt should be a good one if river goes down... Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving... Best Wishes & Safe hunting... As pappy says: keep your head held high & your powder dry ... rofl it can get wet down thar... flag

I went to OSBWMA today and the main gate was closed. I was hoping to scout and walk some before the next flood. Can you park at the gate and walk in when the gate is closed or does that mean no entry??? Know one was around in the offices to ask or information was not posted. Any suggestions??

Means it's closed. One of my buddies is a biologist on a WMA over that and when they shut it down for flooding they lock the gates. I wouldn't go in if the gate is locked.

Thanks Texassippi,

I didn't go in but I wanted to. Glad I didn't. Drove to some of the public boat ramps on the Sabine and the water was high and running swift before the rain started.

welcome ta texasHF texassippi ... 2cents Have meet several of the biologists at OSBWMA over the years... Tis bad with names though... They have a great crew working out thar... Have hunted it since it went WMA... The archery deer&hog & the 3month hog hunts for grillen & chillen... The first several years, a blind person could walk out thar & find were hogs tore up, just walk the ol ATV trails... Majority of it find at night, when no hog hunting allowed, scratch except coon hunt i think... Had came across 60+ hogs several times during the hog only hunts...
Gates closed tis for hunters safety just like safety Orange during gun hunts... That's low swamp land, have walked it when just bout every step tis wet, ya learn ta slid your feet, can be going threw knee deep water, just about ta dry ground, & up chest deep or worst at edge of gully... It is well managed, up Over the years have seen some awsome deer archery season & tis me go-to place for grillen & chillen hogs... Hogs been thinned out, few years back, would see buzzards roosting trees, & dead hog... As said they wanted hogs gone, squirrel, duck, coon hunters see hog, shoot & go on hunting.. Flooding pushes every thing ta higher ground... Right now think its Archery hunts... 2cents After the water go's down & deer & hogs start moving back in would be best... This is duck hunters dream... After deer season & hog only tis best for scouting hunting trip... As pappy says: keep your head held high & your powder dry ... flag

confused2 tis this in reference ta the post made by
texassippi Means its closed
cheers point well taken... As said, in my post, have hunted the OSBWMA since it opened & have chatted with many of the people working their... They are good crew, & are leaniant in few rules... One is parking, if ya not tearing up the place, they allow parking at beginning of some of the old ATV trails... The hogs they want gone... During the hog hunts, if water is high, they close roads so they not torn up & so if something does happen it protects them... Lot of duck hunters still hunt if roads are closed... One of reasons they extended west of Hoard Rd.. Right now think its deer & hog archery hunts... Several years back during general hog hunt, was down on main camping area.. they had gate closed just after, the road ta parking ta east... i was just pulling out of road ta west to the two parking areas, when one of biolagests was closing that gate & makeing sure every one was out... Drove around ta hoard & deer were heading ta higher ground... Their is areas were some high ground & can find hogs... As said, if ya do hunt, tis at own risk... It can be very dangures, have taken hogs buy boat during time frame of legal hog hunts... flag

From the Annual Public Hunting Lands 2015-2016 handbook:
"Some USFS unit roads may be closed to vehicular traffic on a seasonal basis. As a permit holder, you retain the right to walk into the unit and utilize it for authorized activities......"

This may or may not apply to state public hunting units not a part of the USFS.

Re: Hunting the OSBWMA - 01/01/16 06:21 PM

Several years back got bored... i enjoy my hog hunt's, so took 5gal pail sprayed around it, drew some pic's of hog's cut out & spray painted, then put the HB in middle of circle HogBuster its spray painted under logo... drove the bridge on 14, it looks like a lake...have put canoe in on Hoard & canoed ta 14,day & at night.. its Peaceful , last trip was with my daughter... down loaded map from my Topo USA put in mile markers on map, & used GPS so could tell bout were we was on river... Wife & Kids they grown now all been... Happy New Year White Falcon flag

Re: Hunting the OSBWMA - 01/11/16 04:09 PM

Once again me favoret time of the year... Hog any legal means at OSBWMA... tis going threw hunting with drawls do ta aconomy... Seen were sabine on 69 is flooded... So WMA tis like a lake yet... Every thing headed ta higher ground... Really thin out the hog's with the surrounding 24-7-365 pressure... Checked were food plot & feeders at, didn't see any fresh sign so they didn't make it as crow flies ta me old set up... Hows You & wife doing? Still nursing the crap here... Best wishes... OSBWMA pretty much a bust this year, due ta flooding... maybe some day we'll meet... flag

popcorn While didn't get chance ta hunt OSBWMA this season... From reports have heard, this year was worst for hunting since it has opened ta public do to the flooding... Its gonna take several years for hog hunting ta recover... the early years, was the best have seen, just had ta get off the beaten trails... Started out doing the hog hunts, had a lease & permission on other land for deer hunting... Gave up lease & spent more time archery hunting at OSB than hunting by house were had feeders & food plots... Seen the WMA go from seeing 200#+ & sounders of 20+ hogs slowly dwindle & deer #'s increase & some very impressive bucks... Mainly do to Archery only deer, with some draw hunts... Mostly was their for hog hunts, again the limited time & access for hunting played a part with surounding privet land 24-7-365 hunting the OSB twas like the bad lands of the Dakota's... Finding the hide outs... The thick hard ta reach away from 995 of hunters... Proof twas in the puddding... While did more viddeoing, than shooting, may have become an outlaw me self, cause was thar for pudding food on the grill rather than irradication.. As pappy once said: Hog's the other wild game... Still Proud suporter of WMA... It give the low income people a place ta hunt, not every one can afford leasing... up ta the crew out thar... Some Great memories, & cheers ta those who have shard camp & time in the woods with... flag

Re: Hunting the OSBWMA - 01/23/16 10:05 PM

cheers my bad... Are they allowing the use of ATVs on east side? Last year the last snow we had, last part of March eased down their for a hog hunt... Tried east & west parking areas.. Water just about every step... Going out circled around deeper parts, tennishoes wrapped in ducktape... On way back ta truck, said heck with it... Not first time been like a frog out thar wondering about the woods knee deep in water... Hit one of the many gullies, ya gotta slide feet, have gone up ta me shoulders in past, found spot could cross between knee & crotch deep... i usualy huntsolo & it can get dangerous down their... Always good ta have a pard with ya just in case... Even though river might be down, it gonna stay wet, lot of standing water... Spent many hours down thar waiding wast deep on hog hunts... Stay Safe... flag
