I got selected for an alligator permit. Has anyone done this before who could offer any tips? I have watched videos online about hook and bait but that's about the extent of my knowledge on alligator hunting.

We have been to J.D. Murphree WMA on two alligator hunts, nothing first time but got two the second time. My son and two buddies got 3 last year. PM me with your question's and I'll try to help.

You might PM Sniper John. He has been on several gator hunts and had a lot of success.

A lightweight but steady boat, 10hp+ outboard, trolling motor, and a pushpole.
Some 300-600lb line
big NON Stainless hook
rotten chicken

Pretty much all you need.

Yep. Simple as that. You will also need a cheap shotgun that is no big deal if you lose it overboard. I've got an old H&R single shot 20 gauge that worked great. Picked it up at a pawn shop for $50. #6 low brass shells at a distance of a couple of inches do just fine.

For the hook and line, here is what I used.

Good luck!

You might let us know which hunt you were drawn for. Comparing Daughtry, Mad Island, Murphree for example. Each are different in how they are hunted.
