Hog Hunt June 5-7

Hog Hunt June 5-7 - 05/26/15 06:39 PM

Hey guys,

I am taking one of my best friends out before his first child is due, unfortunately she will need 3 surgeries within the first 2 years of her life. Either way, we want to take him out and have a good time, will probably be around 6 of us.

We are looking at the following areas:
Sabine River Authority (pg 58 of the handbook)
Bannister WMA

We would generally hit richland chambers but it is already closed to hog hunts, but I know that area well. Wife went to SFA so those are first 2 I can think of that seem open year around and have have enough area to hunt.

Any suggestions? Has anyone been out/around these 2 WMAs??

Thanks in advance!

Thanks colt.45! I will pass on the prayers for sure.

If you know of any other WMAs in the Nacogdoches area that are any good, we are not sold on Bannister yet.

Lol... I was planning on calling the Bannister WMA to see what it looked like before we headed down. Was not sure if East Texas was receiving as much rain as we are up here.

Sabine River WMA is in Panola County

scratch ya got me going threw the old public hunting lands booklet's.. They didn't send the new one... Didn't get permit till late Feb or March... Every thing going internet, on line... Looking at the 2013-2014 one... June hunt, take it for hog's ? You looking for all legal means, think RC WMA is normaly closed in June... Theirs few opened year round archery only, OSBWMA started couple years ago, unit #708, #747E are few of the ones i've hunted, all got hogs... Theirs few others besides one U mentioned that have year round all legal means hog hunts... Been to a few... Depends how far ya wanna drive... Hunted unit #904, got rained out, but did do some scouting, rofl went threw two sets of hunting cloths before headed back.. Kept raining, & in between dry spells radio said the may close roads.. This year is wetter than that year was... Best wishes... flag

Would I get slapped if I posted this in the hog hunting sub? This sub does not seem as active as others

rofl thats up ta the mod's, i've had topic's done gone missing... Ya might get some hit's from outfitters, type in looking for Free hog hunt.... First got on here, their were few posts... Suggested WMA land is about as Free as ya can find... i usualy huntsolo rumor has it i stink, scratch do tend ta fart alot... Give it a try, they might move it back here... Just watch weather, & be prepared if ya go in case its a little wet... i use ducktape on my tennishoes more ta keep them tagether than ta keep water out... Best wishes.. flag

Thanks for all the info colt.45! Mucho kudos.

We decided on Bannister WMA for now, I have tried calling the number listed half a dozen times over the last 3 days with no response frown

That being said, we are ready to hike in a few miles, stalk and spot hunt style! I am sitting at work at the moment and already anxious and itchy!!!! Going to hit up the range Sat morning to x2 check my sights.

Also, per http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5426745.pdf

This seems to indicate that we COULD night hunt in the Angelina National Forest, just not in the WMA... I may have to test it.

Yep, you will need a boat!!!! I know that place. It's also called or known as Yellow Dog. Our place is up river 20 miles or so and where our water level now is about a mile from the river. So what I'm saying, when you drive thru our gate and drop down to the bottom, that's where the water starts!!! bang

Hope you guys stay dry, Houston looks like a swamp.

I'm not sure where Bannister is, but everything in E Tx is under water now, that is, any river bottom. They have been getting their share of the rain and all those lakes north are opening their flood gates as well, which ain't helping at all.

Any updates on the hunt? We gettimg a gusher here this morning... Rumor has it OSBWMA water been over the road, so far hogs not made it this way.... Ya'll atill go do the public hunt or go with outfitter... Up in the hog hunten form ones doing best are ones hitting the problem area's using NV, Thermal, getting permmission is hardest part... Few having luck trapping... Public land hog hunts, are one of the few, do-it-yourself hunts left... Getting were not able ta do my huntsolo thing... Finding hogs was always the easy part, the backpacking out for grillen & chillen tis were the work begins... angel for friends family.... flag
