Using LBJ Grasslands

For those that use the LBJ Grasslands, please show respect for the land that we are allowed to hunt for free. Be kind enough to take your trash out with you when you go. The US Forest service has a hard enough job maintaining the lands there without having to clean up all of your crap. Also, please keep your vehicles on the designated roads and stop thinking that rules don't apply to you and that you can drive wherever you want to. I appreciate everyone that uses the land and does follow the rules and cleans up after themselves. After hunting on several of the tracts of land there since turkey season began, it is truly amazing how much litter is being left behind. In a world where our government is fighting with itself, please don't give them any more reason to think about doing away with our public hunting lands. Sorry for ranting but we as hunters are grown men and women and should set a example for others, this is America, land of the free.

Man, that sucks. If things continue on the same coarse, there will be no more public lands to hunt for free. If the states gain control they will either sell off the lands for private development(for taxing purposes) or begin charging some crazy high usage fee. The states already get the license and goods sales but I guess that isn't enough.

I haven't hunted the Grasslands, but I do camp and fish there on occasion. I was there in March camping at Clear Lake and doing some fishing. It was amazing how many shotgun hulls and broken decoys I saw from duck hunters. It made me very angry that all waterfowl hunters will be condemned for the sins of the guys that aren't mature enough to clean up after themselves, in addition to the concerns you have about the threat to our public hunting lands from these actions.

I fish from the bank of the Trinity a few times a week and it's even more disheartening seeing what people leave there. The debris and general trash (what blows into it from the roadways or people littering around the watershed) on the Trinity is bad enough, but when I see 60 yards of fishing line balled up on the ground, or plastic containers of worms or styrofoam containers for catfish baits and even broken rods and reels that people just leave laying on the ground, it really grinds my gears, a term I use so I don't get put on the WOS from what I really want to say.

I lease lands for the TPWD public hunting program and if the slobs out there don't get a clue and start cleaning up their hulls and trash you all will see many of the leases disappear. This year I am asking the head of Law Enforcement at TPWD to instruct his wardens to write tickets to anyone that has a hull or trash at their feet or anywhere near them. Even if it is not yours, pick it up. It's a privilege to hunt these areas and your $48 permit doesn't allow for any stupid acts like trashing the area. And if you see someone that is, say something or call a warden. You all lost a great duck lease in Falls County this year because of hulls on the ground.

I keep a trash bag in my pack and try to pick up the crap as I go along. Dang disrespectful people should be ashamed!

Good on ya. I filled a 30 gallon plastic trash bag with garbage at the parking area at one of the more northwest land parcels.

Try checking out the Trinity when storm water is coming down. The amount of trash is unbelievable.

Some of that trash is from the horse people riding the trails. I've seen them throw trash along the trails while I was hunting. I too pick up what trash I can fit into my small backpack.

I made another trip out to LBJ to turkey hunt this weekend and all I can say is wow. The complete lack of respect for the Grassland properties is just overwhelming. I hunted 3 different properties and gathered 2 Walmart bags full of trash and a bag of someone's household garbage from one and a Walmart bag of cans(beer of coarse) and bottles from another. The thing that really got me, was that someone actually drove onto a trail on one property and dumped a sofa in the woods. What a idiot. If you are reading this and it was you, sorry for the insult but you should know better and should be ashamed of yourself. I was amazed that one property I was on I saw no trash at all. I would like to ask again that you please pickup after yourselves. If you pack it in then pack it out, I'm not fortunate enough to have a lease at this time and I am totally dependent on the public hunting lands for my outdoor recreation. Let's all work together to ensure that we have these properties to hunt for years to come. I am making memories there with my grandchildren and would like to continue to do so.

Not just hunting lands. Every time I go camping I come home with more trash than I make, and it still feels like I don't even make a dent. I don't get it, why crap up the land you get so much value out of?
