hog hunting ray roberts - 03/03/15 04:22 PM

I went duck hunting at lake Ray Roberts earlier this year and saw alot of hog sign. I decided to grab my bow and check it out Sunday. I saw lot of sign but no hogs. Does any one have any experience hunting up there? I know baiting is illegal, but is there any legal attractants you can use?

Not sure about Ray Roberts. Very few public land allow baiting for hogs. On public land hog hunts my best luck has been moving slow threw the woods, checking thick hard ta reach areas. Keeping eyes roaming for movement, even behind ya, & whin see sign check for freshness, some times just a kick of d ol boot next ta sign can judge by difference in the dirt. Leaves are off trees, just sit, listen & wait. rofl i need the exercise. Been sitting & waiting between to corn feeders, waiting , Learned at OSBWMA by sitting & waiting most of the sign made at night, No hunting presure. Best wishes. flag

Are scents like acorn rage spray ok?

From the public lands booklet

Baiting—The placement of minerals, vegetative materials, or
other food substances used as an attractant for wildlife.

I would assume a scent would not be baiting. I sed to hunt out there and would find well defined trails to sit. Get there early and wait for the sun.

Have seen hogs hunting like cold45 says.. just not connected yet.

Went out last night and saw tons of fresh sign. I walked up on the largest pig bed i have ever seen. Beside it was a log of scat the size of my arm. Im not sure if i want to meet the sow with her piglets that laid it. Not with my bow.

cheers good place ta set up tree stand. Leaves off tree, can see good distance for movement. Use climing sticks, hang on stand easy up down access in case hogs moving in different direction. Messed up at house hunting hogs. Stand sitting between two feeders, heard hogs over by bow stand, bout 150 yrds give or take. Decided ta wait in stand. Hogs won that round. flag

I wish i still had my lease. The rancher i was leasing from actually didnt have the right to lease it to me, so when the land got sold the new land owner kicked me off. Now i am hunting public. much harder to scout and hunt.

Sorry ta hear bout lease. Bright side, can take lease money & do a day hunt. video's from OSBWMA shows some video's of hog beds came apone. One with the AR laying in bed if ya look at stick or twig, its wet, hog was few feet in front of were shut video off. Took video of hogs while laying prown during archery, have shoulder problems. Before could get drawn, one hog easrd up ta were could tap it on snout. rofl It took off with others. Stay safe. flag

Me and my son was duck hunting RR this past season and just at daylight we hear a bunch of pigs about a 100 yards from us. They were in a group of large trees that stood out from the underbrush around them. Lots of sign around the shoreline in that area also.

cheers with the 24-7-365 pressure being put on hog's on surrounding land. WMA can be some good hog hunting, do to its restrictions, toughest part is getting em out for grillen & chillen. flag

Walk around enough on RR and you will find people's feeders, stands and cameras. I have seen several sets on it.
