Any Leica scope fans?

Any Leica scope fans? - 07/12/18 10:57 PM

Well, as luck would have it, I was the winner of last month's CameraLandNY drawing:

True to his word, Doug mailed the scope promptly and I received the unit in today's mail. Doug also mentioned in passing that both he and Leica would appreciate it if I posted a review of the scope. I'm glad to do so, as I'm already something of a modest Leica fan. I already owned an ER 2.5-10x42 IBS and an ER 5 4-20 Plex, so the new Magnus 1.8-12x50 is my third Leica scope. Without being a true connoisseur of alpha glass, over the years I've assembled a decent collection of good glass, meaning I bought the best that I could afford without having my wife divorce me. For example, in binoculars, I own two porro-prism (read: really heavy) Docter Optik with beautiful glass and a non-current 8x42 Zeiss Victory with excellent roof prism glass. In rifle scopes, I own a Vortex Razor HD Gen 2, Sig Sauer Tango6, a Leupold LPS, a Vortex LH, and a couple of Meopta Meostar R1s. All nice stuff, but not at the Leica Magnus level, to be sure.

As soon as I get a chance, I intend to take all three of the Leica scopes to the range for a review, focusing on the new Magnus, of course. I can probably summarize the review in advance: stunning glass with some curious reticle options. If I had to offer any advice on buying Leica rifle scopes it would be this: make sure you select a reticle suitable for your use, as I'm inclined to believe that some were designed with the European market in mind.

I suppose that no review would be complete without a field test of some sort. I used my ER 2.5-10x42 in Namibia with great satisfaction under some quite trying conditions; my expectation is that the Magnus will be even better.

The Magnus mounted on an old Voere 2155 .30-06. The suppressor is a Griffin Armament Sportsman DT.

More seriously, I took the opportunity to look through all three scopes at the same (10x) magnification at the same target and under the same lighting conditions. You know what? Leica makes some really, really clear glass. All three scopes were gorgeous and clear as clear can be. The glass in the Magnus is just absolutely beautiful. I honestly don't know how it could get any better or whether I could see the difference if it could. As I said above, select a reticle that is well-suited to your intended use, and go shooting. Quality glass like this makes range time an absolute pleasure.

That would be 1/10 Mil per click, with F-ed up labeling on the turret.
