So whats up with all the hashmarks????

So whats up with all the hashmarks???? - 10/26/16 09:16 PM

Not trying to start a big deal, but for people who dial up and down for all their shots, why do you need such a "busy" reticle? tons of Hash marks, stadia lines, numbers, etc. Wouldn't just a plain crosshair be best??? You range your distance, dial, boom, dial back to zero, range dial, boom, and repeat...??? Can't see where you would need all the mil mil marks....MAYBE windage hold points?????

I have a MOAR reticle in my SVH but all I use is the tiny floating X in the middle and dial my elevation dope and back to zero. all the lines look cool

I HAVE seen where trained "snipers", real snipers, can use the stadia and use them to actually get their range (distance to target) but then why would you dial when you could just "hold on the proper stadia" boom...

If this make no sense, don't worry about it, I'm old and use a BDC lizard

For shooting with pure holds, no dialing, when time is short. I've done it hunting lots, and shooting matches lots. Every shot I use the windage marks, for sure. They are the absolute most important. But the elevation designations below do come in handy, when time is short. I've even used the ones above center for holding under. I'll give you an example. (keep it simple)

1 1/2 MOA targets.

500, 600, 700 yards, 10 mph cross wind. Engage 5 then 6, the 7, then 5, then 6, then 7, first one is south east, second one is south, third one is south west, do it in 90 seconds.

So my elevation corrections for all those ranges are 2.5, 3.6, 4.6.

I'm going to dial 3.6 hold under .9 for the 500, right on for 600, hold over 1.0 for 700. That's elevation, but there's wind to worry about.

Corrections for those distances and that wind are as follows:

500 .8
600 1.0
700 1.4

I can dial some wind, and hold some, or just hold it all.

Come out with me for a day, and it'll all make sense, I promise. Lots of guys have said much of the day was learning how to squeeze every function out of the scope, while in the process of just becoming a better shooter.

I'll dial elevation if I have time, but if I don't, I'll hold. I have EVERYONE hold about midday, just so they know how to do it, it's a valuable tool.

holy moly you are a walking mathematician pretty impressive

There's no math.

The ballistic calculator does the math. Make the correction it told you to make, that's it. If it was wrong, adjust MV or BC until the calculator is right. It's really very simple.

Fireman, where/how you hunt, do you seriously have time to do all of that every time you want to shoot at game?

I've got elevation corrections memorized for the 6.5 Creedmoor. I've got labels on the inside of the scope caps for the .308, 7mm-08, and 7 Rem Mag. I can snap shoot, easily to 500 yards. Just have to know how far is what I'm shooting at.

6.5 Creedmoor

200 yards .4
300 yards 1.0
400 yards 1.8
500 yards 2.5

Hold on those designations on the reticle and squeeze.

But as far as location, I've got some very large plowed fields, and pasture land all around my place that I have permission for hogs and coyotes. Of course out to 800 on my own place. Couple wheat fields in Ballinger for Jan. antlerless whitetail, and huge open canyons in Terrell county for December mule deer. I like being able to cover lots of acreage.

You have all the differing wind holds memorized too?

It's this, the more you practice the better you get. Like any job or sport.

Simple answer would be, you don't always have time to dial so instead you just use the reticle.

Yes, but for 5 mph at 3 or 9 o'clock (a.k.a. 90 degrees a.k.a. full value) That's where Mil shines.

200 .1
300 .2
400 .3
500 .4
600 .5
700 .6
800 .7
900 .9
1000 1.0

7mm-08 is the same.
7 Rem Mag, deduct .1 of all those holds.
.308 Win, add .1 to all those holds.

Wind is 7-8 mph add 50%
Wind is 10 mph, double them
Wind is 12-13 mph, double and add 50%
Wind is 14-16 mph, triple the 5 mph holds.

EASY!

Good stuff! clap
.308 would be:
200 .2
300 .3
400 .4
500 .5
and so on?

You don't always have time to dial, if you know your equipment you'll be able to hold and fire before Mr. Nervous Buck exits the far end of the wheat field.

That was my point as well.

Also, in extreme circumstances you may run out of elevation adjustment on your scope dial and need to use the Mil/MOA marks. It happened to me when I tried to stretch out a .22 beyond 400 yards.
