Optics for AR-15 - 07/18/16 05:27 PM

I know it is a broad subject but wanted to get some opinions on type and brand of scopes some of yall prefer on your AR. Mostly I will be doing yote and hog hunting with it. The reason I ask what type is because Im not set on a red dot, holographic, night, thermal, or etc. I appreciate any help!

I like a 1-4, but this is more for a universal use scope. For hunting, a 2-10 would be good. I have a 3-9 Super Sniper mil/mil scope on one of my AR's and it does really well for general hunting. I switch back and forth on the optics, also, depending on what my need is.

Yep, but I GREATLY prefer the 1-4 or 1-6.

I put a Leupold 3X9 with Firedot on my AR for hunting. Fantastic scope for hunting with the AR, and the Firedot is great for low light or night shooting. For plinking, the scope gets a bit cumbersome, I would prefer a red dot type sight, or irons. I guess I am going to have to get another AR, o e to hunt with and another to take out to shoot for fun.

That's why I change my mounts often. They hold zero, also, when switching them.

1-6X on mine. It is the perfect optic for the 16" AR.

Re: Optics for AR-15 - 07/18/16 11:48 PM

I am currently using an aimpoint micro with a 3X magnifier

For shots under 100 yards in thick forests like I hunt it is perfect. I typically only use the 3X if it is 100 yards or so.

however I am looking hard at the Strike Eagle by Vortex which is a 1-6 power and its under $400 this will be my next purchase for a 6.8 build that I plan on doing

My vote for you is the Vortex 1-6

I really like the SWFA SS Classic 1-4 with illuminated reticle.

I have the Vortex PST 2.5-10 on mine.

I only have one AR so it needs to be a jack of all trades. It sports a VX-R 2-7x33 with Firedot 4 Reticle, Vortex Razor RD and BUIS.

Vortex Eagle 1-6 is a reasonably priced scope. I like mine.

With the red dot on top of the scope does the position of the stock with position of eyes have a conflict? It would seem if the red dot was at a 45 there wouldn't be a lot of movement to acquire sight picture.

1-4 or 1-6 is a good all around AR optic. make and model depends on your budget.

Hasn't been an issue for me.

I like to have 1-4 minimum, preferably a 1-8 depending on how much you want to spend.
My 18" RRA Varmint rifle has a Leupold Mark 4, 3.5x10 on it.

This is the only Burris I have, and it's great. Burris Fullfield II, 2-7 x 35mm

I recommend getting quality QD mounts for an Aimpoint patrol optic for plinking and short range and a good scope that would work for the varmit hunting you plan to do. Quality QD mounts will hold zero. up

I've owned a couple of those scopes. I think they are about the best bang for the buck you can get in an optic.

Trijicon Accupoint 1-4. You get an illuminated reticle and no batteries required. If I didn't run that scope I'd be looking at one of their 1-6 scopes.

I went to a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x on a ADM Recon-X 30 QD mount and I love this package. I have shot it up close stalking pigs and out to 300 yards on yotes. BDC reticle offers great target acquisition on close fast shots, illuminated for night hunting and has ranging capabilities with the sub-tensions. ADM has this package for $430

Put this on my SBR, has held zero very well.

I'd put the same kind of scope I would put on any hunting rifle. Unless you plan on sitting in the brush and shooting pigs 10 yards away, a 3-9 or 3-12 would suit you just fine. I guess I just don't see the need for a 1 magnification scope on a gun that isn't intended for CQC.

Some people don't sit and wait, instead they are opportunistic. So one could get into close quarter with hogs. It's nice to have a low low-end when that happens. It's also nice to have some magnification for the 100-300 yards shots on the same vermin. 1-6X is perfect, in my opinion.

Why do some people still run irons on lever actions and ARs?

And those people are awfully rare. Most folks are going to be hunting hogs from a stand.

A 3-9 or 3-12 + iron sights mounted at a 45* angle would be a good compromise.

Re: Optics for AR-15 - 08/05/16 12:32 PM

I don't know of the "most" you speak of. I know of a whole bunch that travel on a UTV with thermals, and lights looking for hogs. I know zero that wait from a stand. I have nothing bad to say about a 2.5-10x, 3-9x, or 3-12x, but it's odd to find you telling a 1-6x is more for combat. OK, call it combat on hogs, they all need to die, whatever means necessary.
