Question Re sighting in and suppressor.....

Question Re sighting in and suppressor..... - 08/30/15 11:13 PM

Question for you ballistic gurus out there..

So, I swapped scopes of a couple of my hog/predator rifles (6.8 and 300 BO) and went to the range to sight them in unsuppressed. Then, attached my newly acquired supressors to see how point of impact was affected (man, that first suppressed shot, even supersonic was sweet!)....

Sighted them in at 50 yrs (these will be 90% night shooting rigs)

The 300 shoots about 2 in low suppressed and the 6.8 about 1 in low...

Since I havent decided if I will shoot these rifles suppressed 100% of the time (if so, I would have just sighted them in with the suppressor on) I am looking for a way to compensate when switching back and forth from un-suppressed to suppressed.

How consistent is that 2 inch difference over my MPBR distance? Do I just always aim 2 in higher when suppressed, or does it change with target distance?

Or, when I attach the suppressor can I just dial in 2 in of "up" (which since I sighted in at 50 and the turrets are calibrated for 100 yrds, I really would dial in 4 in)

Hope that question makes sense. I only had about an hour before the range closed, or else I would have played around with it more. Also, when I get to the lease, I will have a chance to actually shoot at various distances and see for myself what happens.

Thanks!

Whether to 'hold' or re-dial is up to you...personally I would re-dial and reset my turret to 0 because I'm bound to forget my hold at some point if I didn't. As far as the consistency of the 2" difference at distance, my guess would be that your MV is different with/without the suppressor....when you have time shoot both to distance and take good notes....or chronograph both and go from there, but since you're shooting 'night' distances (I know nothing about), it may not be enough of a difference to worry about.

Your point of impact shift (POI) is a repeatable and consistent shift. So, yes, you can simply dial in the correction from suppressed to unsuppressed. Most rifles do shoot low when you hang the weight of the suppressor on the end of the barrel. If you are MOA, you will need to dial in ~4 moa for the 2 inches at 50 yards. Your MPBR will be about the same from suppressed to unsuppressed. You will pick up some speed though with the suppressor. I gain about 110 fps with my 125 grain bullets in the 300 BO from unsuppressed to suppressed. Shoot your rounds both ways to know exactly what the effect is.

Thanks for the help ya'll!

I think I will "dial" my scopes when attaching the suppressor for now. Although, I am sure I will forget to "dial" or "un-dial" sooner or later lol..

Why would you shoot without a suppressor? I know the length can be a hassle but I hate shooting without a can.

I went through the same thing you did with regards to suppressor POI shift. I decided to just dedicate a gun to being suppressed 100% of the time and dialing it in permanently. I'm a KISS guy so it made sense.
