I always see custom build plans for rifles. If it was possible to combine parts from all optic companies what components from all makers would you combine to build your perfect "one" scope.

Glass, Reticle, Weight, Length, Turret/Knob, Color, Moa/Mil, Tube diameter, power, objective....

Build It

Glass: best in the world (whom ever that belongs to)
Reticle: Mil based. Cross between a Night Force and a Vortex
Weight: light as I can get it.
Length: short as I can get it
Turret: 1/10 Mil, 10 Mils per rev, 30 Mils available
Color: Flat Dark Earth or Black
Tube: 30mm +, whatever it takes, dont care
Power: 2x - 28x
Objective: 50mm

Built in level 6 o'clock of the reticle.

I'll go at it a bit different from the scope Fireman wants and I know already I can't or won't afford.

5 to 20X50
Lightweight, like a Leupold
30mm tube
Turrets and zero stop
VX3 quality glass would do
Leupold TMR reticle with illuminated dot

All in all, I guess my ideal scope would be similar to a Vortex Viper PST FFP with a better zero stop, better glass, and that illuminated TMR reticle.

Best actual glass would be from Asia, either V.N. or China from what I have heard but I still believe the Germans do a better grind, but what about coating ?? If you have good glass you can use a 40mm objective. JMO.

Although I have not handled one yet, I really like the specs and reviews on the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x50 but it is 34mm. If I could make a few changes for a long range scope it would be:

- first would be an integrated bubble level at the bottom to keep eyes on target (not sure 6 or 12 position)
- mag range seems about perfect for LR, if for an AR I would drop to 2-12 or even 1.5-9
- would opt for 30mm tube
- zero stop elevation turret 10 mils per rev, shorter windage turret with option to leave capped
- std mil el turret but also easily changeable for BDC for multiple density altitudes (bet JG's blood pressure just spiked )
- G2 type reticle or even Horus (busy but like the idea of being able to adjust for conditions rapidly without tweaking turrets)
- lighted reticle with color options
- of course, very good glass

I'm pretty happy with my S&B PMII 5-25x56 with the H2CMR reticle. The only real downside is the weight, but I don't mind because the glass is incredible and the mechanics/tracking is perfect.

So you want a BDC turret, but also a Horus? So when using the Horus you will have to consult the ballistic calculator to get proper holds since the reticle will be in Mils. But that's NOT what you want to do for the turret?

You can borrow my label maker anytime you want to make a custom turret.

As long are we are discussing the ideal scope, would you rather your S&B have more than a two year warranty?

It would be nice if they came with a longer warranty but from what I've been told, the S&B US Service Center is top notch and they will absolutely take care of you even if your scope is out of the warranty period. My gunsmith had a very positive experience with them regarding a repair. I don't know what the exact issue was, but they fixed his scope for free and even refurbished/cleaned it for free.

Hopefully I get the same treatment if I ever experience an issue.

Yep no since trying to rebuild perfection...... S&B 5-25x56 P4f..... If I had to change something about it, I'd shave about 2" off....

I sure would hate to buy a 3-4 thousand dollar scope, only to have it as an impressive paper weight 3 years later. I realize they are deviating from the two year warranty now, but how long before they enforce their new policy?

All mechanical objects can and will eventually fail. As someone who has had to use that warranty several times, I won't purchase a scope without one.
