Scoping a rifle and the clearance between rifle and scope... - 12/11/14 08:14 PM

How much clearance is necessary when a you put a scope on a rifle? I've changed my scope on my .22 and the one I just put on it has clearance but it's minimal! Real minimal. So is that good enough?

Thanks,

I'd say if you can slip a business card between the barrel and the objective, you're probably fine.

Once I decided to mount a scope on my Winchester 52 and get it as low as possible. I got it low all right. The bolt handle wouldn't clear the ocular bell. Had to jockey things around to get it to work.

bore axis and optical axis here is an nice article Whatever the choice of ring/base system, make sure the rifle scope (optical axis) and rifle barrel (bore axis) are aligned as closely as possible. This alignment is critical to get sighted in properly and the scope performing its maximum potential. This can be best thought of as the process of aligning the reticle to where the rifle barrel is pointing. SWAROVSKI OPTIK rifle scopes are delivered with the reticle centered in its Range of Adjustment (ROA). In the vast majority of situations, a rifle scope is mounted, several clicks are made to get zeroed, and you're ready for the range or the field. http://www.eurooptic.com/swarovski-scope-mounting-tips.aspx

If you can fit a folder dollar bill between them, you are good. Business card is great on a rifle recoiling more than a 22.

I've shot with some guys that shot GS Precision rifles with the rail that's extended for NV set ups, they couldn't get a business card between the rail and scope, but they never had any contact. We used feeler gauges to find the clearance but I can't recall what it was
