Nice. Looking forward to the pics on the progess. You going to put windows in?

Re: Container cabin build - 01/22/17 11:41 AM

He doesn't want any windows, I have tried to change his mind, but says he wants to be able to lock it up tight.

If security is a must, NO windows. Even with security bars welded over openings they can be removed.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/23/17 05:03 AM

I helped with one that was turned into a reloading/ gun vault. Using a 40'er, They put a metal door with digital lock in the center, and boxed in 10' on the right to the double door end for general storage, the middle room, 15' was dedicated to reloading and gun tinkering, and the last 15' was a gun vault with a framed up metal wall with another metal door, with another digital lock, this one was heavier. They used an exterior hung bard style heat pump and installed re-bar bracing through the duct pass throughs. It's worked pretty well for them, and is located under a big barn overhang.

I don't see the difference between having a couple small windows with expanded metal then bars welded over it vs. just having a steel existing wall. They can cut through that too if they want...

He will want it for moisture control. Or atleast a vent.

I put two cans of the damp rid and it helps a bunch.

I absolutely could not sleep in a place that did not have any escape route aside from the main door. If the thing catches fire inside, you're toast- literally.

I'm with you on that, and have argued with him about it. I haven't given up yet.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/25/17 02:58 AM

I'd at least make a 2' x 2' emergency exit at the other end that was braced and locked from the inside so you could pull a couple pins get out......don't like not having a back door......

Re: Container cabin build - 01/25/17 04:27 AM

That's cool!

Re: Container cabin build - 01/25/17 02:33 PM

I would put it under a shade tree with insulation, A/C, and an escape door. When I open mine in the summer, I move back quickly.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/25/17 04:58 PM

That's awesome! Can't wait to see the build out!

For those thinking you needed an escape hatch...You could also do an escape hatch on top, with a ladder that could live on the wall (or a few "shelves" that you could use at foot holds, if you ever needed to get up to the hatch and use it....most people wouldn't think to look up top as a way in.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/25/17 07:39 PM

Can't really cut out top, it will mess up drainage and water proof. Hard to raise(weld up) extension on the roof.

Best thing would be a lock on the inside for a swing down window covering made of expanded metal.

on container Windows you basically cut hole then weld in a 2x2 11ga frame, then screw windows in from inside.

This and the right blade and a new "door" will open. $90 on Amazon, blade less than $5.

True. Was thinking there might still be a way to waterproof it, but really didn't think it through all the way.

I guess you could by making it a diamond at top and continuous weld using 2x3 or 2x4 tubing but might as well do window at that point.

That Corten steel isn't real mild or thin. I burnt up my skill saw like that. Weak point on mine is window bars ,AC cage and welded on lock cover on end doors. Those you could cut with portable saw.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/26/17 02:16 PM

I would really just like to put a window in the bedroom, use the cut out as a shutter that pins inside and be done. Putting in a steel walk through door in the living area, so if someone wants in they will get in anyway.

Anyone bought a enclosed trailer and modified for deer camp? I'm thinking about selling my RV and buying one. I could also store my ATV in trailer.

Got the door cut in today, and most of the framing done.

Re: Container cabin build - 01/28/17 03:48 PM

Looking good. Using batt insulation or spray in? My next build I'm not going to use prefab shower waste of space. Going to tile bottom and use corragated metal walls.
Posted By: Jkd106

Re: Container cabin build - 01/28/17 04:19 PM

Just batts, saves a little money and this thing gonna be tight enough. That's a good idea on the shower.

Mine batted and warms/cools pretty quick. Only thing I wish I'd done different is shower. Cheaper and better use of space and really not much more work. Liner is cheap and so is tile and grout. Also get ready on shower drain. Floor in mine was thick think 2.5" had hell finding flange.

Fun builds can't wait to start my next one

Re: Container cabin build - 01/29/17 05:05 AM

He stayed in one on a hunt this year, he said they built a raised floor in the bath to accommodate the plumbing so they didn't cut through the original floor.

Re: Container cabin build - 02/07/17 04:08 AM

Assuming the floor is original, is there any concern of the chemicals used to treat it? I'm interested in building out one of these someday so watching closely.

I didn't but it's easy to seal if you need to.

2x2 11ga square tubing. Cut the hole. Weld in the tubing frame. Screw window in and caulk.

Re: Container cabin build - 03/03/17 02:25 AM

I designed some apartments out of containers. Threy 50' boxes per floor and four floors. They turned out awesome. For sealing doors and windows weld angle iron around the openings and mount to th angles.
