Electric Fence Feeder Pen

Cows have ruined 2-3 feeders so far. I’m not a fan of hog panels due bullet deflection.

Could a person use solar electric fence around a feeder?

Would it keep the deer and hogs out as well?

I have 0 experience with electric fence except don’t P on them

Don't shoot them in the pen and you won't have to worry about bullet deflection.

In my experience hog panels will be a lot less of a headache. Accommodate for bullet deflection by raising your blind so you will be shooting over the hog panels. Or cut the hog panels shorter in the areas you expect to be shooting through. This would also help keep hogs off your feeders.

^^^ When we bow hunt out of ground blinds we plan on shooting em outside the pen.

Use hog panels(34") and elevate your stand. Tail gate feed on your side fence towards the feeder...

Cut pieces out of your hog panels to make strategically placed shooting holes in a couple places.

Yes you can TRY electric, the cows will likely damage it a few times until they learn, same with hogs and you’ll never teach all of them. A deer hits it one time and may never return.

FWIW I used to use a hotwire around a 22 acre hay field to keep cows out. Deer routinely jumped the wire. Personally I use 34" hog panels on my feeder pen.

If main goal is to stop cows then building a pen around the feeder is your best bet from my experience

Get a better feeder. Get one made well and solid and get one y’all enough the cows can’t reach the feeder control unit then put t post on each leg. I hunt Ft hood and there are a lot of cows but have never had an issue with them messing up my feeder.

If you have cattle issues now then a 34" hog panel pen may stop them for a while, but they know what is in the feeder. They will push or jump over 34" to get the feeder. 2 wire electric will stop them if you put one wire at 20"-24" and the second one about 12-14" above that. The deer will go under more readily but still can jump it. Make take them a while if they touch that wire with their nose. Second option is to buy the 34" hog panels but elevate them about 20" off the ground. Third would be to use 50" cattle panels and cut down the top two section in front of the pen and then at selected locations around the pen. I would not cut any on the backside to make them come around in front of the pen to jump in. I had a bull that was pushing over 34" hog panels to get to buffelgrass inside the feed pen. I finally had to go to 50" cattle panels and cut down about 4 section to 40" and it never phased the deer. Stopped the bull problem.

Surprised that no one has suggested barbed wire. A simple, but well built, 3-strand barbed wire fence will keep all but the most ornery cows out. Typically, this will require tying back your corners, but is an easy/cheap way to keep cows out and is easy to shoot through if you must.

Another option is a single strand of barbed-wire 12" or so above a hog panel. Determined cows will easily push over the top of a 34" hog panel, but a strand of wire above it usually kills their drive...

We put a 2 wire up in less than 2 hours. No tie offs. Only calves go in once a month. 4 t posts per side 8 ft apart. But we don't have crazy cows luckily and they have over 1000 acres to roam. Some will get in anything though on smaller plots.

34" panels wouldn't even slow down my cows. They would all clear that in a second. But they stay back from a single strand of electric at the same height.

about ten years ago..a hunter lost his ballance fell off a ladder and was impaled by a tee post(he called his son which called 911 he died on the medvac heli on the way to the hospital.).accidents happen..so be carefule while on a ladder when you do this!

Barbed wire for sure. A roll is pretty cheap and theres plenty to make a larger pen using trees, which also makes the deer more comfortable going in. I've tried electric multiple times without a whole lot of luck.

I wired my top strand with electric. The deer and hogs had no problem going underneath the third strand. The bucks easily jumped it.

I used 34" no climb fence on my pen. Made the mistake of putting some alfalfa in for the deer and the cows walked over it. I added a row of barb wire a couple of inches up and quit feeding alfalfa......

That's what I've done. The landowner where I hunt has 20 longhorns that are basically pets. I just have to keep them away from the feeder. They don't try to push through the wire.
