Selling an Elk Mount - 02/02/18 01:54 PM
We are moving to a new house and my wife won't let me put my 6x6 Elk shoulder mount in the new house. Honestly there's really no good place in the new house for it. I'm thinking about selling it. Are there any laws regarding the sale of a game animal mount that I should be aware of?

Nope, My house was getting crowded so I sold an axis mount not long ago. It was easier than I expected. People want them for game rooms, bars, restaurants, etc. I looked at Ebay and got a good feel for what they sold for and just listed it locally. Sold in about a week

NO both Individuals and retail stores sell them all of the time. No place in the garage for it ?

Sorry but your man card has been revoked.
My elk head would be moving with me; the wife, maybe not so much. Good luck, sale is legal.

Migratory bird mounts are an issue, but I think that's it.

I've sold several on ebay. Just be sure you put in enough money to have it shipped correctly.

I checked eBay and was very surprised to see how much some people are asking for their mounts.

That's the asking price. look up the sold listings the mounts don't bring very much. Why don't you try and sell it on here.

In CA it's illegal to sell any wild animal parts without a special permit. I don't know for sure what the laws are in any other states, but in the land of many laws, CA rarely enforces that one and usually it's only done when they are trying to get you for a bunch of other stuff. I know that my taxidermist there had to have those permits to sell mounts that he did and then nobody ever came by to pay for them. After a year, he would sell them.
Life has a way of changing in time and you will regret selling it. If it was me, I would find a friend to hold it for me if I could, if not, I would put it in the garage, or box it up and store it somewhere out of the way. Maybe buy a shed or something.

Elk take up a lot of room and and I understand the lack of space
I would see if you could find a resturaunt to loan it to that way if you wanted it back then you could get it

I think the only mounted you can't sell are migratory gamebirds, such as ducks. My wife, who conducts estate sales, had been informed of this prior to the sale. You may have to have a permit to do so. They fall under state and federal regs.
