Less Spikes this season? - 01/12/18 02:02 PM

I don't think that I have seen even one at my alligator bottom stand. What about everybody else?

We had a ton of spikes the group saw this year, I think I had 4 regulars myself at 1 blind (two feeders). 2 were older and 2 were young.

Me too grin all yearlings except for the one I took which appeared to be a 2yo and much bigger than the others and was even more aggressive towards the other deer.

Re: Less Spikes this season? - 01/12/18 06:38 PM

About the same amount of spikes as last year. I took a two year old last weeken and another hunter did the same. On the last sit I had a six point and a fork horn come in at the same time and the fork horn was much bigger.

Shoot the bigger bodied spikes and leave the young looking spikes alone.

I have at least three at my place. Two seem young ones and the other is older pretty good size. Only have seen him once or twice. Might let my buddy's son take him this weekend if he comes out.

I saw about 6 all year. Young and old. Should have shot the old one. He was a trophy in his own right.

Seen more this year than a long time, just a few though, the bonus cull tag they added in the AR counties has really thinned them out.

I'm in an AR county and not sure I consider one fully branched buck exceeding 13" and one unbranched ar spike buck as the 2nd legal buck an "extra" cull tag. I would consider that the case for a two fully branched buck county + an unbranched buck/spike "an extra cull" buck situation though.

Contemplating on thinning the heard or shooting 5-Stand this weekend.

Re: Less Spikes this season? - 01/13/18 10:58 AM

Nobody on our lease saw a spike all season. Lot of young bucks but they all had several points.
Maybe after 7 years and us shooting every spike we saw did some good.

I only saw two, towards the end of the season had some nubbin bucks break thru but I don't count those...

Re: Less Spikes this season? - 01/13/18 11:21 PM

We see very few. Maybe 2 all year that are true spikes.

Re: Less Spikes this season? - 01/14/18 12:21 AM

Have not seen a single spike all year, everything has had both branched antlers. I have one 1.5 yr old that every time he comes out I think he is a three point, but when you put the binos on him that one side just forks enough on the end that I won't shoot him.

confused All AR counties used to be 1 buck, its a bonus cull tag.

Re: Less Spikes this season? - 01/14/18 12:02 PM

Hardly no spikes this year....just a few and they were 1.5yo. We try our best not to cull any buck until 3yo

all these old spikes, but no pictures?????

hmmmm.. I guess genetics suddenly went to hell in a hand basket? or maybe it's a situation of range conditions?

interesting.

Mabey my last hunt this year and still not one spike I'm sure just coincidence but still strange. Put engine in Camaro yesterday thinking this will fill the void !
