Cotton Seed

Anyone know the best place to get Cotton seed in the valley area? As close to Zapata as possible would be nice but can also be in the Corpus area.

I have a ranch near Pleasanton and I would like to know also on a dealer.

Thanks, i was able to find some but wasn't able to put anything out do to having to go to work. I've read a few suggestions on how its fed but would like some from anyone that uses it regularly. I have 6 free choice protein feeders i keep full but i know cotton seed cant be put in those. Would a trough be best choice? or the usual round wire feeder i read about a lot? I was thinking a trough with a cover over it to keep it out the weather as much as possible even though it does weather better than other feeds.

Sinton or Edroy or Mathis all have gins. IIRC Sinton puts in the totes to haul. I have seen it fed in wire rings, cattle style trough/bunk feeders or just on the ground in piles. Just feed it out of something that will allow the rain water to flow through it. Make sure you add minerals in the same feed pen.

How much is in one of those totes that Sinton fills? Aproximate.

Wire baskets are best. Just make a circle 2-3’ wide and set it over the t post (don’t tie it to t post) and fill it up. Weather doesn’t bother it so it’s a waste of time trying to keep it covered. Our bulk piles are out in the weather also with no issues. It’s a great feed for body recovery

IIRC $130 or $140 for a 1000 lb tote and $7 deposit on the tote.

This is the time to get it as all of the CO-OP's are working overtime to get the cotton ginned. Type in coop gin on google
maps and go to the areas you would like to search. There's nothing near Zapata, but Corpus has several gins around it. 3x3 wire mesh is the best. I have the 2x4 squares now, which is readily available at any of the supply stores, but 4" is a little too big. If I remember right, around 7 linear feet unrolled makes around a 2' circle. If you plan on hauling it on a trailer, make some sideboards and lay a tarp down about 3' down on the front of the trailer and cover it with cottonseed to keep the wind from getting under the tarp. The last load I hauled went 4 hours with no problems. You can fit 2.5 tons on a 16' trailer. One ton will fill about 4 to 5 of the wire cages. Also, don't expect the deer to hit it the day you put it out. It may take a month before they realize it is food.

I never seen the big deal with it. I have a neighbor LF that has been feeding it for probably 5 years now.I don't feed it and his deer are no better than mine and I don't feed anything except corn when it gets closer to the season.

If his deers bodies arent in better condition than yours then he isn’t feeding it early enough or feeding enough for the herd. It will make 1st year differences in bodies. They recover from the rut much quicker with it and obviously if they recover better before shedding they will have a headstart on putting the good stuff towards their next antlers. It doesn’t have the minerals but used for recovery and body conditioning next to pellets it’s awesome

Im sure you've all heard of gossipaw, not sure on the spelling. If not I think its worth googling and reading how it can affect the semen in bucks. I know alot of people have been using it for a long time but there's a potential it could temporary sterilize a buck.

He feeds it from as soon as he can get cotton seed until his 4000 lbs. runs out. Which is usually in Aug.

I built my feeders with cattle panels. This is the first year I have tried cotton seed and was amazed at how fast the deer took to it.

Gossypol and it doesn’t matter unless it’s the majority of their diet (pen deer). Deer in pasture won’t eat near enough to see it



Yea 4000lb isn’t much at all unless it’s a small place and if it is he’s feeding everyone’s deer. I would grab 3.5 tons at a time on 2500ac and take 3-4 loads between March and end of Sept. I really should have had it by around first of Jan

Now in Mexico in one month we went through 3 tons already. Just had another 27 tons delivered and should get us through October
