My First Big Buck

Hunting this weekend at our place near Dime Box in Lee county, he came out... It was a perfect morning, I woke up before my alarm, got to the blind early, fired up the heater and within minutes, he showed up. I was amazed since I haven't seen him on the cams very often, maybe once every 2 weeks. In fact, I really didn't think I'd get a deer this season at all since I can't shoot does in Lee county, I don't see many big bucks and I haven't seen any spikes this year on the cams.

When this buck came out, I was shocked, the rack was so large I didn't even have to think about lining up the ears, it was obviously over 13". (Turns out he was 16.5" and 135 lbs). The picture makes the rack look larger for some reason. I decided since he was my first (I started hunting 3 years ago in my 50's), I'd have him mounted, so 8 months from now, I'll have a nice trophy. I've got 55 lbs of meat to deal with now.

I also shot a hog on Saturday, so might mix up some venison, wild bore sausage with store bought pork fat!

Thanks for all the comments. It is a good feeling and I'm still feeling it several days later.

I have some good video of him under the feeder before I shot him (the camera battery died before I pulled the trigger) and video of my hog kill the previous day that I'll try to get up on YT this evening. Will post a link here.

Wait until he's on your wall, you can relive that day anytime you look at that buck, as other said, that will be a great mount. I bet held look awesome on a wall pedestal mount.

Awesome deer. I've been looking for property in Lee County.

I decided to compile all my video from 2017, which includes some hog hunting earlier in the year, bow season with my cell phone mounted to my crossbow scope, and gun season up to last weekend. The season isn't over, but I think I'm done. At my place, hogs often come out when I'm deer hunting, so there's video of me trying to get them to leave without firing at them, so I can continue to deer hunt. At the time, I didn't need any hog meat. You can also see who always wins when deer and hogs show up at the feeder at the same time.

The 10pt that this thread is about can be seen walking under the feeder at 8:45 in the video just before I shot him (camera battery died).

Yes you can, get you a bow or crossbow and get after it in october, that said aren't antler restrictions great!

I do have a crossbow and I did hunt in October but didn't kill anything. I did miss a doe, which is in the video above. The doe compressed and the arrow went right over it's back. I'm learning you really have to aim low.

Quick update on the meat processing... I've been processing every evening for the last few days and the idea of mixing hog with venison has worked out really well. Food town regularly sells pork fat trimmings for .79/lb, so I bought 6-7 lbs of fat, and mixed 60/40 venison/hog with about 25% pork fat. I've used this combo to make Italian meat balls, pre-seasoned taco meat(no pork fat, olive oil instead), jalapeno and onion link sausage, breakfast sausage and some amazing chili. All VERY good with a great texture.

Still need to make is some hog BS jerky and some bacon burgers, and smoke the link sausage. It's a lot of work, but provides a ton of food all year long, to eat and give away, so it's worth it and it beats using a processor since I can get all the recipes and seasonings just like I want them.
