Best and worst hunt of my life.

Best and worst hunt of my life. - 12/09/17 09:03 PM

I can only blame myself for not shooting the biggest buck I've even seen while hunting. Camera shows it much lighter then my eyes did. Also over whelmed with the amount if deer that all showed up with in 3 minutes of each other. Super bummed.

confused2 Some folks are hunters and some are photographers....

I've seen a few that can do both, but for me I didn't do good at either yesterday. Lesson learned.

Good job. I’ve had snuck show up the last two morning hunts and leaves 15 minutes before legal shooting light. It happens

Neat video. There will be another day. If it was to dark for comfort, you made the right choice. Sometimes the feeling that overtakes us, when things do not work out the way we would have liked, keeps us going back.

Yeah looking back at the video it showed up much brighter then it truly was to my eyes. Never noticed how big he was until I watched the video back.

I know hard to explain, I had so many deer come in at once I was truly over whelmed. Just need to learn from my mistakes and hope to get another shot at seeing him.

That was some action! That first buck was a dandy! Reminds me of my cousin. He always sees good deer and never gets a shot. Hope you get a crack at that 10 soon

Good luck keep us posted, at least you saw something that big in person. I've only seen deer like that on camera at night or very far away.

Best thing that could of happened to you. You can stop shooting and targeting 3.5 year old bucks now.

You and I had a discussion that you said you shoot them because you didn't have any older mature bucks to target. Now you've discovered that you do if your patient. Trying to pick out your favorite 3.5 year old buck you had targeted cost you the best buck you've seen.

It's only a lesson learned if you apply it to the way you hunt and the goals you set and STICK to the plan until you are successful and not give in just to say you killed your buck or bucks for the season just for the sake of getting a buck kill on video.

Re: Best and worst hunt of my life. - 12/10/17 02:25 PM

Nice video. Stuff happens, you know what you did wrong now get over it and move on because you can't undo what's been done. I'd be back in the stand hunting that ten ASAP! As for filming, I've tried to do it a little but when it's came time, when I've seen "the buck" I've always chose to shoot the buck with the rifle over the camera. The buck I shot last year I videoed in one feeder pen and was getting ready to shoot it which would have been the first time for me to get one that way only to have him jump out of the pen and head to my other feeder. I tried to get it set up again to video but when he was moving in front of the pen I decided not to risk losing him and went ahead and pulled the trigger....it simply came down to priorities.

Cameras and video have saved a lot of bucks’ lives. I love my camera, but I don’t even think about it when it comes to a buck I may take - until I determine otherwise.

Re: Best and worst hunt of my life. - 12/10/17 04:23 PM

Nate, I like to video as well. Kinda like counting coup on the nice ones you don't want to kill. I have self videod some of the buck harvests I have made but it's a game time decision on whether or not to film the deer as well as if it's one I want to harvest. Both videos and game cameras can at times be deceptive. Trust what you saw with your own eyes and you will not fall victim to ground shrinkage.

Thank you, I wanted to film just to be able the replay the memories, but that day I took it too far.

I find that my memory does a pretty good job without a camera distracting from my hunt. I’ve tried filming before. These days, I prefer to hunt.

It's a great video because it's not staged and it's your real life hunting experience. It also shows you have some great up and comers to look forward to next year. Just keep at it this year and you never know, he could give you another shot. Good luck the rest of the season.

Re: Best and worst hunt of my life. - 12/12/17 03:14 PM

Best= When my son shot his first buck, he had hunted with since shortly after he could walk. Shot his first doe around 9 and it was rough for a while because he wanted to shoot a buck and all we were seeing while he was with me were young bucks and I would not let him take one. At first it ticked him off but then he got it, so after shooting several hogs and more doe along the way he finally got his first buck at age 14, it was a dandy 10 and I was and still am the proudest dad up

Worst I went to a big ranch out west with an X friend of mine now and his two sons. They had Zero regard for the game laws and the oldest son actually bragged about harming a calf. He came back with scratches all over his upper body and arms. He then started bragging about how he had just put the smack down on a young calf and that it ain't never getting back up, that it is now the coyote's dinner, the dad just grinned?

On one day I had to dang near force the dad to tag a doe his son had shot, he said if the game warden pulls them over, they will say the meat is from a hog, finally he tagged it nuts

When we were finally leaving (Thank God) to go home on the ranch road, there was a momma cow and her probably 3-5 day old calf, same boy said dad stop he wanted to put the smack down on this calf too and the dad started stopping to let him. I had to yell fiercely at them multiple times to keep going that they are not going to hurt that FN calf mad finally they drove off. The whole time it was such a surreal and weird experience that people actually have that much disregard for other people's property, animals and game laws!

It was such a messed up situation that I did not want to nor did I shoot a deer.

Wow Nate, never seen that many while hunting either. Sure haven't seen that many horns nor as big a buck as those. Great video though. Been watching videos at work, itching to get back after it this weekend. We are still developing our spot me and some buddies hunt. One day with any luck we will have a herd like that roll up. I'm sure you will get either the one you were after or that monster soon enough. Let us know. Good luck to ya!

Too awesome Stub! I know you are way proud. My boys didn't show much interest in hunting, my father didn't hunt and I never had much opportunity growing up. I'm older and have only been at it 5 years but have only taken one and it was a buck, opening weekend of rifle 3 years ago and it was the 1st off the property we hunt.

They're lucky that momma cow didn't put "the smackdown" on them. Sounds like they are some real jerks.
