Either on the hoof or on the ground, I’m trying to get some pics together to show a buddy examples on different aged deer. Throw in a comment or two on why you personally aged it that way.

Ramball, unfortunately you are correct. This was done in one of my archery magazines years ago but the survey was done with wildlife biologists. The survey concluded that most were accurate with very young deer and very old deer. In the middle they were all over the board.

I'm a pretty good judge of a deers age on the hoof until they loose there spots. After that I would hate to bet my paycheck.

According to the tooth wear method this one was 6.5 years old. He is a Tom Green county buck...

I bought some tooth ageing kits where you send in the teeth and they scientifically tell you the age, will have a few more when I get results back.

I wish I could post some pics but the neighbors shoot every buck that gets to 13". I'm about ready to sell this place and move somewhere else.

I have seen this buck numerous times and watched him in the plot for long periods.
I believe he is 4.5 based off his back is still fairly straight, little belly sag and rump and shoulders not to big.

First two pic is deceiving, most bucks look bigger walking away.

These side pics is what makes me believe he is 4.5. He gets a pass this year regardless.

keep in mind that aging a buck on the hoof can be a different story pre rut versus post rut
