BBD Denton County... Again - 11/20/17 05:34 AM
We’ve had a phenomenal year so far in Denton County. My daughter harvested a bruiser of an 8 pt on youth weekend that grossed 159. And tonight i was blessed to have her with me in the blind when i got mine.
It was an absolutely crazy afternoon hunt. Deer were everywhere and bucks were chasing hard. We hadn’t been in the blind 5 min when a small fork horn chased a doe right in front of us at 50 yds.
My daughter was snapping pics and all of a sudden a 10 pt that must have been bedded down right in front the whole time and whom we hadn’t seen, jumped up and confronted the youngster. Upon reviewing the pics later, we noticed the 10 in the background eyeing the intruder.
We watched him square off with the fork horn and then run after the doe. We saw multiple bucks and i ended up rattling in the buck that l shot. He came in downwind and crossed in front of us. Took the 60 yd shot broadside with my 280 Ackley. I usually shoot 168 Berger VLDs and have had stellar performance with them from 150 to 400 yds but have been leery of using them up close due to unreliable expansion at high velocity so i worked up a dual load for close range that shares the same zero — 170 gr Norma Vulkan. Figured it was as good a time as any to see how’d they perform and let me tell you they are DEVASTATING. The buck bulldozered 15 yards and crumpled. .284 hole in and good exit. Internal damage was impressive. Absolutely demolished the heart.
Craziest part of the hunt was while we were taking pics afterwards, my daughter noticed a deer 100 yds behind me while she was taking pics. It was a 160+ drop tine buck that stayed in the field for 30 minutes watching us. We both had filled our tags for that county so all we could do was watch in awe as he just stood there without a care in the world.
Hers puts mine to shame...
