I've had very good success hunting a remote area of the Davey Crockett National Forest in East Texas. I would suggest scoping out public roads that provide others with access to the area so you'll have at least some idea if other hunters are likely to hunting the same area. Hunting the Sam Houston requires a Public Use Permit, as well as wearing a minimal number of square inches of blaze orange clothing.
Good luck!
Thanks! Luckily our property is on the far side from the road, so it's pretty deep into the forest. Definitely will be scoping, though. This is my first time out; unfortunately haven't been able to make it out before Thanksgiving week
