Sam Houston National Forest - 11/16/17 05:18 PM

Hey! So anybody have experience in Sam Houston recently? My dad and I have some land just north of 105 in Cleveland, TX, that backs up to a huntable patch of close to 500 acres.

I've had very good success hunting a remote area of the Davey Crockett National Forest in East Texas. I would suggest scoping out public roads that provide others with access to the area so you'll have at least some idea if other hunters are likely to hunting the same area. Hunting the Sam Houston requires a Public Use Permit, as well as wearing a minimal number of square inches of blaze orange clothing.

Good luck!

Ive hunted that area quite a bit. Area is really thick compared to the west side of sam. I dont see too many whitetails over there but tons of hogs which I love.

Thanks! Luckily our property is on the far side from the road, so it's pretty deep into the forest. Definitely will be scoping, though. This is my first time out; unfortunately haven't been able to make it out before Thanksgiving week frown

Hogs, deer... Either way, there's meat in the freezer - the primary goal.

You should also view satellite images of the area to see how grown up fence lines and other cover creates places that deer are likely to use as travel routes.
