Hog panels without a feeder?

Last year I put this stand up and it was the place to be. During bow season last year I was seeing does and decent bucks on camera all of the time. I was just hand throwing corn on the ground every few days. Well one day at the end of bow season last year the hogs found it. The spot has not been the same since. I see deer there but not as many as before and not as many bucks. I have a big gravity feeder there right now so the hogs don’t get to it, but the hogs still come because they bump into it and the corn falls, and the number of deer don’t eat out of it like before. There are some but not as many. My question is if I take down the feeder and put up a few hog panels in a circle and just hand throw corn within the circle do y’all think more deer will start to come back and the bucks would start to come back?

Just fence off the gravity feeder and be done with it.

I’m my experience though the bucks don’t come to any of the feeders very often. They were hitting that corn I threw on the ground almost every night last year. I think the good bucks stay away from the feeders. That might not be the case and it may be because there are so many hogs but I’m not sure.

2 options, start shooting the hogs every time you see them, they will eventually get the message. Or put up the panels and the hogs will stop showing up since there is no food.

Where you hunt you should do both. Hand corn areas away from the feeder and hog panel the feeder. Build it with at least 8 panels preferably 10.

I’m not talking about a field though. I was going to put this in the woods that does not have a very big area to start. 8-10 pannels will take a good chunk out of it I would think. I was thinking 4 panels. Is that not enough?

Or let me ask y’all this. Can I just use a 50ft roll of welded wire?

You can if that's all you have, but make sure you put your posts close enough together that it won't be easy for them to root under the wire. Running at least a strand of barbed wire along the bottom of the fence may help discourage them, but cattle panels would be your best bet.

No. That is too small and the bucks won't like it. At least 8 panels if your going to build one IME.

We have done this and the hogs eventually figure out a way to get in. We would have pics of them in the pen but couldn't even see where they got in. Shoot em.

I agree. My feeder hasn't been touched at my new area. Threw corn on the ground out from the blind and the bucks are vacuuming it up. They've gone through 150 lbs since a week before gun opener.

Road/hand corn is a great option. If you're going to panel and area to do this, like Pitch said, make it at least 8 panels. IMO you'd need 3-4 rolls of wire to make it large enough to be worthwhile. In either case, put a T-post about every 8-10 feet and wire your fence/panels to it top AND bottom to defeat the hogs.

Your post is kind of busy, this is what I get out of it.

You started hand feeding corn at this spot last year and the deer liked it.
At the end the hogs found it.
Now there is a gravity feeder there and the hogs show up all the time.

Was the feeder there before and the deer still came like crazy? Maybe the deer don't come because there is a feeder? We have pictures of all kinds of bucks on hand corn that never show at feeders.

I think they will react negatively to the fence, deer in general are good jumpers, but it is my experience they would rather not jump and they do not like jumping into small/confining areas. My guess if there wasn't a feeder inside of feed pens to condition deer to it they would never go inside one. When it comes to feed pens, the bigger the better.

I want to hand corn but hogs are keeping me from it. We put the feeder up after the hogs have already showed up so the deer weren’t in there heavy anymore when we put the feeder up. They were in there kind of heavy before I even started baiting. hand Corning helped get them to a certain spot so I know what was there. Maybe I should take the feeder down and stop baiting that stand all together to see if they come back to just passing through it.

Might be the best way to go......when you hand corn, don't put it out until the morning of your hunt. Get up a little earlier if need be. Also, if the hogs continue to show in daylight after you corn, blast their a$$ until they stop showing up to eat it. This will not mess your deer hunting up. Shoot them, leave them lay until the deer show up or the hunts over for that sit.

We had a stand like that on our lease a few years ago that worked well with just hand corn inside the pen. I have a stand that I hand corn that has been ruined by the hogs this year. I had several mature deer hitting it the last couple years and this year almost nothing but hogs. I'm gonna try to go sit it this weekend a kill a few hogs and see if that slows them down.
