First one down this season

First one down this season - 10/26/17 01:38 PM

Got on a new lease this season. We run quail dogs so we keep getting farther and farther into West Tx to get into quail but also the deer hunting keeps getting more interesting. We've been about an hour north of Abilene the last few years. This year we got on a huge property for a great price. The catch is it's even farther North West. It's a 7hr ride from my home in Wimberley. This area really doesn't have big trees. I mostly just bowhunt so I use tripods mostly. My tripods were obsolete cause they were to high. I ended up using 2 10footers and a 12 footer. They are actually still to tall but I'm making it work.
So the dove hunting was a blast and we spent our whole September doing that at a small bird hunting property we have. I knew I needed to set up for archery but time only allowed me to get feeders and pens set up. So I get out there last weekend with the priority to get work done. I had 3 tripods to set up. Here's a pic of one of the cheap 10ft tripods I brought at Acadamy. 89bucks. It weighs 65 pounds and it folds up. Decent deal I thought.

Then I got it set up and wired up branches to the tree. Not much cover as you can see.

Sorry to be continued. I have to get to work

Sorry it's cause I had to go.. I was just showing how that tripod can fold up and fits on the ranger. Nice for transport in rough terrain.
So I get it set up. There just isn't enough cover.

I had to move it back and get it behind the cover.. what little there was.

This pic is from the feeder and it's with added branches wired in. I was on a schedule so I left it like the and headed to the next set up.
Long story short. I was planing on hunting the next morning. The wind didn't do what it was showing the day before so I ended up having to hunt that tripod that kind of sticks out like a sore thumb.

My feeder goes off at 8am. I'm in the tripod at 6:50. Deer are walking around at 7:15. I hear them jumping in and out of the pen. I was thinking I'd be skylines at any minute so I just tried to stay frozen. At 7:35 4 does come in off a mesquite flat on my right. They stop and stage 15 yards behind me on my right. They never looked up...if this was Wimberley I'd of never of gotten away with this set up. No doubt.

Anyway finally the rolled in and I shot one. She was huge compared to the deer I'm used to. In camp I weighed her. 122 pounds. She wasn't even the biggest one there. Stuck her with a muzzy tro car expandable and she went 40yards.

I'm digging West Texas no doubt. We still have not had any decent bucks show up. I've seen a dinky mule deer 3pt and a 4 year old 8pt that'll score 130. I'm thinking they will show up later when it gets really cold out there. As you can see it's super green out there. There are still flowers.
