Pop Quiz - 10/13/17 10:52 AM
Two bucks come down a trail in front of you. First buck has a much larger rack than the second buck but the second buck is obviously an older more mature buck 5+ and first 3+ yrs. Which buck would you take? Both are B&C book deer.

If both are B&C trophies, then shoot the mature one
I would shoot the bigger racked buck. Next question............

They are both book deer, book starts at..? 160? How much is much bigger? If the 3 YO is a 200+ incher I'm blasting him. If one is a 160 and the other a 165 ill shoot the mature one.... This is all assuming I don't have a heart attack and can pull it together. I probably wouldn't shoot them both even if I could because I hunt a smaller property with my brother and dad and would hope one of them would get the other.

Lots of variables would come into play for me. If one is a big 8 and the other a 10 or more, I'd shoot the 8. If I had pictures of both from the year before, I'd shoot the one that improved the least. If they score roughly the same (+/- 5to10 inches) I'd shoot the older one. If nothing is known, it would come down to fencing....High fence, shoot the Old one. Low fence, shoot the Big one.
I would shoot the mature buck.

Are they in a high fence? How much does the big one cost? Are they corn fed or grain fed? Too many dang questions to answer before shooting but I'd shoot the big one if it was on my place. If he jumped the fence I would hear boooom!

I would shoot the older one. He's working toward not breeding many, or any does. The younger one is working toward being king of the hill. I'd want his genes to spread.

your property? Lease? High or low fence? If my place I take the mature deer. If high fence I take the mature deer. If lease or pay hunt I take the biggest deer.
