The big old grey doe

The big old grey doe - 01/18/17 10:25 PM

This season I didn't hunt deer much. I spent it mostly bird hunting. I have access to about 5000 acres here in Wimberley and keep 8 feeders running year round. So most of the season I just let friends hunt my stands here and there.
There is stand near a huge clearing. It's a 16ft tripod in a tree line facing North west. Typically your high enough that when deer walk in the tress behind you you scent is to high for them. It's a sweet setup they don't have a chance on a north wind. This year I had some guys from Colorado hunt and a guy sat there. I knew it wasn't good when this guy brought his huge backpack with him to the blind. I explained he wouldn't need it and how you can't move enough to use it anyway. He just had to have it.
When I picked him up he said the does came in and winded him. Then they kept coming back and blowing at him. From that day nobody killed anything there. They lol said a big doe would wind them and stand in the trees and blow at them till they left.
I decided to hunt it. I noticed the guys from Colorado cut down all the brush around the top of the tripod. The bow hanger was broke...I guess from his huge backpack he had to have. I hunted anyway. Around prime time I saw a good group of does in the trees behind me. One huge doe stood up on her back legs and then sounded the alarm. Then she left and returned a few times till I got down. I tried to sit in the cedar off to one side and catch her trying to wind me. She caught me though. I was so mad at those guys from CO after that. I have a buddy who brags about his scent loc gear and how they can't bust him. He hunted there and she caught him too. A few people hunted her and failed. Then I got busy and forgot all about it.
Then last Sunday the last day of season I really wanted to get one more deer before season closed. I had to guide quail hunters all morning in Round Mountain. Then I hurried home to try to deer hunt. I showered with scent free soap cause I had to. They hit the closest blind to the house..turns out it was this blind with the big grey doe. I had not even thought about wind till I got there. It was South South East so basically blowing right to the feeder. I decided I'd sit anyway cause I didn't have by time to go anywhere. Then I remembered the doe and was so bummed out. I thought maybe she's moved on by now or maybe a different deer would show up first. I went ahead and hunted there.
On my way in I was plucking cedar off the trees and rolling it between my hands and rubbing my clothes and boots. I could smell the cedar just standing there.

Good story. You think it was the cut tree limbs that scented the hunters and then from then on the doe knew about it? Or you think it was the huge pack of beef jerky the dude had in that backpack grill

Either way, cool story and that doe is one to get after...next season wife

Wow sorry this is a long read...
Anyway I sat and waited and right before dark I saw all the does coming in. They circled me a few times in the trees. The wind was hitting me in the back though. I just held my bow ready cause I knew I wouldn't have much time once they got to the feeder. Finally they started moving in. All the young ones got there first. I was just going to arrow a 2yo but then I saw the big grey doe coming in. It was so intense..so funny I kept reminding myself it's just a doe. I thought the other deer would wind me any minute now and I would not get a shot but they never did. In came the doe. She was so paranoid and kept looking right up at me and backing out. I just sat ready. Finally she made a mistake. She didn't come to the feeder but staged next to it. Her vitals were 34 yards away and open. I had to draw so slow. My heart was pumping so hard I could feel it in my head. I settled the pin and moved it really low and realeased a 2in cut grim reaper on her. I saw red on contact of the grey fur. She tore out of there and the other deer followed. I found her piled up over 100 yards away. I can't believe she ran that far. I got both lungs and the top of her heart. Sorry no pictures. It was just a cool way to end deer season.

I've been thinking about this so much. I think she busted his movement. And then saw him again and again. Then went behind him and found his scent. Then she knew how to check the area. She was a trophy doe. I regret not taking a few pictures of her. She was a great deer.

That's a great story! And I've got some deer that have busted me by sight from 250 yards. They know where the hole is in the tree, and when there's no hole, they know somebody's up there. I've corrected that going forward.

Great story and great way to end the season. Those old does are some of the most difficult animals to hunt and a true accomplishment to take one down.

Sometimes you get a smart one. I shot a doe last Saturday we have estimated over 10 years old. We have been seeing her for several years as she was obviously OLD. I can say I never once saw here before she was looking at me or the blind. She knew it was there and it was the first thing she checked every time.

Glad you got her it, it is very satisfying, congrats!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

They are wise, and tough to outsmart.

Good story, and glad you got her. Yes, you will have smart does who can get "educated." I've seen it first hand as well.
