Not What I expected to see this Morning

Not What I expected to see this Morning - 12/22/16 10:12 PM

Came across my first ever feeder pen death before dawn this morning. Had a 4 pt. hung head down from the hind quarter on one of the feeder pen cutouts. Looked as if he had expired a day or two earlier. Took a bit of work due to rigamotist and the fact his leg had basically melded to the pen. Sad to lose a youngster that way. Pics to post tonight.

I have a video from this weekend of a 6 point eating under my feeder when it went off. Thing freaked out and nailed the feeder pen fence, then got loose and finally got out. He took a plug out of his ribs on a t-post coming out. Didn't look like he punched a big hole but he got hung up good. Hurts to watch.

Found this guy last year stuck in a roadside fence. Looks like he had been there most of the night based on the amount of hair everywhere. Took 10 or 15 minutes to free him, but he didn't go 20 yards before laying down to rest. We were on our way to town and when we came back through a couple hours later, he had expired. Huge body for what I'm guessing is an 18-month old. Shame.

This is why I'm glad our pastures are never over grazed allowing us to use 36 inch hog panels and the cows never try to get in and the deer don't get hung up.

Was hunting in 4 corners Colorado about 15 yrs ago as we were heading to town watched a doe and 2 fawns cross the road in front. Mama jumped the fence and first fawn went through 2nd got all twisted in wire. We stopped and untangled her however she really struggled jumping and flailing all over. Needless to say you need to be careful so you don't end up getting hurt for your good deed. Cant help but wonder how many are lost in such sad situations.

Stop using feeder pens and this won't happen. Build your feeders heavy duty so that cows can't knock them over.

The pens are as much or more for hogs since cows are off during deer season. I refuse to feed hogs for hours each night as I did during first 3-4 years owning the place.

Got to a point where the deer stopped coming in to feeders. Too expensive to feed hogs. First incident like this in 3 years of having feeder pens. If I have another I may rethink it.

This particular deer was on camera several times before this without an issue so very surprising to see.

there's way more killed on the highway
daily, so i wouldn't lose too much sleep
over it. i see them jump my barbed wire
fence all the time like it was nothing.

That is sad, but not much you can do about it. Hogs are a problem that is not going away. It's a catch 22. One deer in three years is not bad. It happens, but not frequently.
