Proud father. - 11/30/16 10:23 PM

Sorry for the long post but I am a proud father.

I finally had the chance to take my daughter hunting for the first time. I have been without a lease for several years and the opportunity to take her on other hunts has not presented itself. She is 10 years old and an amazing girl.

A friend of mine set up a hunt on his ranch for the men from our adult bible fellowship. I asked if I could bring my daughter and he agreed, along with several other fathers bringing their children. We had an amazing weekend with everyone having a great time.

I surprised my daughter by picking her up from school with a loaded truck and we headed to the ranch. It is about a 3.5 drive and she talked the whole way there, it was awesome. We didn't get to hunt Thursday night because we had to go around to all the blinds and spray them for wasps. Friday morning we saw a few deer but mostly younger bucks and small does. I convinced her to wait, promising that there were better animals out there.

Friday evening was when the magic started. We decided to hunt one of the wheat fields on my friends ranch that also has a feeder set up at one of the blinds. We sat there for a couple of hours not seeing much, just a few doe off in the woods but nothing to shoot. Then about an hour before dark all hell breaks loose.
I was texting some of my buddies when my daughter starts shaking me and going crazy pointing out into the field. About 500 yards away are two nice bucks walking around feeding. We start watching as the play around and do a little sparing. Her smile was getting bigger by the second. While this is happening more deer start to come out into the field but they are all pretty far away. My daughter was crushed when a semi drove down the county road and all the deer ran off into the woods. I told her to be patient and wait to see what would happen. Not even 5 minutes later the deer started coming back with even more friends. We had about 30 deer in the field and now the wait was on for them to get close enough to shoot. Finally some nice does got into range and I started talking her thru the process of lining up the shot and then waiting for the right shot. Just as she asked me if it was a good shot I looked under the feeder and saw a huge body with huge horns. I told her to look under the feeder with the scope. She found the buck under the feeder and now we waited for a good clean shot. With about 10 mins of legal light left he finally turned broadside and i started to tell her to shoot when BOOM. He dropped right in his tracks, but then raised his head. I told her to put another shell in the chamber and get back on him and be ready to shoot if he got up. He tried to jump up and before i could tell her she shot again Boom. This time no movement at all. After high fiving, hugging, and then finally breathing we went to see the deer. On the walk over I texted my buddies that we would need help loading the deer. What an amazing buck for her first deer. After making all the guys at camp very jealous she finished off her weekend shooting a doe on Sunday morning. She is hooked for life!!

I hope the photo works.

Buck stats were a monster 9 point. Weighed 244 on the hoof. Waiting on score but estimated to be 5.5 or 6.5 years old.

P.S. the doe was 150 lbs and the largest one shot that weekend.

Christmas came early for you both. Congratulations!

You didn't mention the rifle she was using shown in the photo. Just curious. The pride of any harvest should be extended to the firearm used to take it. If it wasn't already, that might be "her" gun now.

Awesome buck!

Thanks everyone, it was amazing for both of us. She keeps amazing me, and told me all she wants for christmas is her buck mounted.

She was shooting my Ruger 243 that I have been hunting with since my dad bought it for me when I was 12. It will be hard, but i might have to pass it down to the next generation and make a trip to cabellas for myself.

Congrats to both of you, awesome story, and memory of a lifetime for both of you, trust me. I'll tell you to try and keep her interested and having fun, it will pay off big time in a lifetime of memories for both of you. I have a daughter that is now 22 and a senior at Texas. Even with her over-scheduled life, she still makes time for her old man to hit the outdoors. Dove, pigs, deer, fish... anything. We have a ton of memories to look back on and smile about. My daughter started fishing with me at the age of three, and pulled her first trigger on a pig at the age of 9 that I filmed (poorly) that I will link below. And this past weekend (before her finals started) she still found time to hit the woods with me and connected on an 8 point we had on the hit list.

And here is the grainy / shaky old footage of her 1st kill at 9 yrs old. 300 lb pig, shot with a .223 at 90 yds.
