Age question - 11/21/16 12:20 AM

First year on this new lease. Deer movement has been slow with the heat and this is the best one we have seem so far on camera. I think he is 3.5 maybe 4. Hard to tell I know.

I wouldn't even venture a guess with those pics. He's a stud anyway.

up I can say from experience that sausage from a 3.5 year old deer is as good as sausage from a 4.5 year old deer. Either way, that is a nice buck! peep

Do you guys have a good resource that shows you what to look for when aging deer?

There is a chart that shows yearling young mid aged mature post mature that id use rather than exact year. Google should find it... think SFA had a good one back in the day

Hunt just outside Big Lake. One of the guys on the lease got these on his camera. I age the deer at 3.5 another guy said he is mature. Figured I'd post here and get an idea from everyone. Your deer sure looks darn close. Pm sent.

There are very few bucks in the big lake area that are over 3.5 years old. The drought in 11 and the EHD in 12 cut herd numbers down low. There are a lot of 3.5's and even more 2.5's. All deer look a year or two older this year because of rains.

It MIGHT be 4.5. But it's probably not.

Re: Age question - 11/21/16 06:48 PM

We have a few 4 yo deer but mainly because we are trying to get the age structure back up. 2010 and 11 put a big hurting on the area as well as most of the state.

I shot this deer on the 9th this yr. One of the few mature bucks we have on 18000 acres.

If he walks in front of me I'm passing on him. Don't get me wrong, would be my biggest to date but I really would love to see him in 2 years.
