Lots of Acorns

Wow! there are a lot of acorns this year. About every Live Oak has got them and their falling pretty good. Last time we had a good acorn crop the beginning of Deer season was pretty slow, just weren't coming to feeders very well. Wheat field is coming up good too. Got it planted Monday before last and 4 days later got a 1" rain on it. Deer are going to have lots to eat this year.

Oh yea, bumper crop of Hogs this year too. mad

Question on acorns - I keep hearing that there are LOTS this year, but at my place I haven't seen very many - almost none. I wonder why the difference since I am less than 100 miles south of you. Heard same thing from friend with place in Newcastle - completely covered. Wonder why the difference?

I hear ya, they've hammered me on protein this year and so far barely hitting corn feeders. They usually pull off protein some when the wheat comes up, got 35 acres planted and with a little more rain possible this week,,hopefully.

Dalroo,,I have no idea what the difference is. I would think it would be rain but I had 40" of rain last year and the acorns weren't this good. Like you, I wish I knew.

One of my leases is covered in both post oaks and live oaks. It's dang near unsafe to walk through the pasture with all of the acorns. It's like walking on marbles or something. There's so much corn piled up under the feeders it looks like yellow snow. And the deer movement has gone down to almost nothing. Glad I have another lease where there's almost no oak trees.

Add another reason that I prefer to hunt south Texas...No Oaks and no acorns.

We're covered up in liveoak and Spanish oak. Deer and hogs are fat and happy.
