How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 05:12 AM

I cant decide which rifle to take this year.

Last year i took a my 270, occassionally my marlin 3030.

I bought a 6.8 spc this year with a nikon scope.

I hunt east Texas, shots under 115 yards. Fairly thick, some open areas.

What do yall do? Which would you use as primary?

6.5 CM will be my primary for the Hill Country again this year.

300 Blackout for East Texas where a long shot is far less likely.

Different one for every animal. It will be all leverguns this year and open sights.

308 suppressed for the deer, and I take my 45/70 everywhere just in case but especially in truck or any hunting vehicle, open sights, always drops the hogs!

I will be taking my 6.5 CM AR and a 6.5X55 and perhaps my custom 6.5 CM.

aim 6mm every year for the last 15 years. Before that a 358 model 99 Savage since 1972. The 6mm never fails me and I love the sound it makes when the bullet hits a hog in the face. clap clap banana

I have a single shot 357 MAX open sight rifle that I absolutely love! I hunt East Texas and most of the property is very thick so most shots are 60 yards or less. It's extremely light so it's a breeze to carry and super short so it doesn't snag on any brush. Never fails to drop deer or hog!

6.5 CM
270 Weatherby Mag
280 Ackley Improved
300 Win Mag
308 Win Custom

Depends on the animal, terrain, average distance, or whatever I feel like shooting that day....

I've grown fond of my .270. In the past I carried my 30.06 or .243.

270 and 300WSM, I hunt 9 hours from home and I like to have a backup, just in case...

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 01:41 PM

I usually take 2 out for a hunt, just in case. Have hunted seasons with only one rifle and taken deer with as many as 8 rifles another season, just depends on the mood of the moment and sometimes getting some out of the safe.

This year I will be using a 6.5 Grendel bolt action most of the time it is light weight, handy well balanced and fun to shoot.

Depends on the blind, usually a 6.8 or 7mm-08. If I finish my .308 before the season it will be the go-to.

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 03:25 PM

I usually carry my 7-08, but I've been known to occasionally take my 300Win. This year I'm determined to take something with my Mosin Nagant (7.62x54R)

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 03:32 PM

This year will be the same as the last 3-4 years- Rem 700 in 300 blk out suppressed shooting my 125 SST or Ballistic tip ammo with Vortex 2.5-10 PST mil/mil for glass. I'm sighted in right now with the 115 Bergers, and these have worked well for me the times I have used the target bullets.

But, when we plan to hunt Sniper Hill, the feeders are at 782 and 880 yards away. I'll have my TRG 42 in 300 WM pushing the Hornady 225 BTHP's for that. If the 7/300 WM gets finished before then, I'll run that this year.

Guilty of having a lot of guns. I will usually hunt with my 243, 270, 45-70 lever gun, bow, and maybe 300 wby off and on throughout the year. Majority of time will be spent with 243 and 270 though as I try to hunt with my wife as much as I can and those are the crossovers she also shoots.

When I'm set up in my tower blind it's my .308 Remington 700 in 5R Milspec with a Leupold VX-6. I have sand bags, shooting rests and a steady seat.

When I'm on the ground it'll be my Tikka CTR, .308, 20" barrel with a Vortex Viper. I carry a camera tripod modified with a shooting rest. I have a few set ups that cover a couple of miles.

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 05:20 PM

I loved my .270. Long story short, I sold it. But that's another story. For deer, I usually take one scoped rifle (currently a 30-30 is my only scoped deer rifle (although I will get another .270). I also take one of my iron sight levers as a backup/brush gun, either the 45/70 or the .357 mag. I have thought about taking my AR (scoped) this year, but I don't think I'm comfortable with the .223 for deer. I took a big pig with it with a conventional vitals shot, and it did a fine job, but for some reason, I'm not comfortable using on deer.

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 09:59 PM

I have one stand with a good rest and I'm almost always shooting in the same spot that I use a 22-250. It's really set up to prairie dog shoot but I load a 60gr sp and it does the job just fine. Other than that stand it's the beat up old 700 SPS in .243. It's not much to look at but it goes bang every time and if I do my part its a real shooter. In case you are wondering I don't always do my part... aim

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/11/16 10:24 PM

It depends on the type of area that I will be hunting and the expected distance of the shot. When hunting the deep woods where the shot would be no more than 50 yards, I usually take an open-sighted 30-30. When hunting a food plot and more open areas, I'll take either a scoped .270 or 25-06. If the weather is expected to be wet, I'll take a gun that I don't care as much if it gets wet and muddy. And sometimes I'll take a different gun just to see if it will change my luck.

I really like to take my Tikka T3lite, I use the Hornady American Whitetail ammo 139 grain Interlock Spire Point. Have never had any problems and very accurate and inexpensive. I am going to use my Ruger Mark II in 30.06 this year and try the new Winchester Deer Season XP extreme point ammunition in 150 grain. Again, inexpensive and shoots incredibly accurate in my rifle. I am wanting to see how deadly this round is on hogs and deer. Should be interesting. I hunt in an area with maximum distances of 200 yards or so due to vegetation, so long distance shots are not a big issue. I am curious to see how the larger diameter tip performs on some large hogs.

I have 1 deer rifle. It's a Browning A Bolt in 270 with a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 on top. I absolutely love it and it will always be my deer rifle. Now for hogs I have a few different options but prefer my 6.8s.

6.5 Swede
25-06 blond
25-06 brunette
7mm-08
264 Win Mag
243
308
Not necessarily in that order.
The Swede's already blooded this year. Axis bacon burger sure does taste good!

I take a 308 bolt gun and my 300 BO equipped with NV if want to take a few pigs out of our wheat field. If I bring my daughters or son in laws I'll bring my .243 or 6.8 for them to hunt with.

I usually smoke a ridiculous amount of doe (MLD) with my Custom Rem700 220 swift but that's to easy. Gunna try and bag a few this year with pistols and shotguns. Ruger hunter 44mag with a 4x, Glock MOS 6" 10mm, Remington 1100 with a rifled slug barrel.

Two different deer rifles during the season. 30/06 & 270 and a 22 rifle. Yes, I still enjoy shooting a 22 at squirrels and racoons at the feeder.

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/18/16 01:27 AM

It's been various 7-08s (gone), a 280 (gone) and a 260 recently but I dusted off a BAR 270 yesterday after having not fired/hunted it in probably 12 years. Stuck a Leupold I had laying around on it. Think I'll start with 150gr Fusions.
260 will likely see some use as well.

When I was on a lease 2 - (1) generally 30.06 or .308 and (2) Savage Mod 24 .223 over 12ga. Covers deer hogs & turkey

Re: How many rifles you take during a given season? - 10/18/16 08:24 PM

I think with 2 rifles you can cover most hunting situations and have a backup just in case.
Here are the 2 rifles I have settled on.

Sako85 30-06 with Trijicon 3-9X40 shooting Hog Hammer 168gr Barnes TSX

AR6.8 with Aimpoint Micro T1 and 3X magnifier if needed shooting Hornady 120 Gr SST

If sitting in a stand I like to have both with me but when stalking the AR6.8 is preferred
