Crap in corn...

Crap in corn... - 09/05/16 02:07 PM

Have any of you guys bought corn that had chunks of molasses and grain in it? This was the second time this feeder has been stopped up. The first time I managed to get it unstopped without emptying it but I came bck and it was stopped up again. This time I completely emptied the feeder and replaced all the corn. I found chucks of the above in the corn. Ugh! What a waste!

Yup, dirty corn. I think we've all had that a time or two. It stinks!

Only time I have had a feeder clog up was with a sealed lid that trapped moisture in the barrel causing it to mold and the other was my brothers feeder that had the plastic lid that caused moisture to collect all the dust in the corn and clog the funnel.

We use the galvanized slip over lids and they work the best.

This is the reason I changed to a controller box that can be lowered by loosening wing nuts. You can lower mechanism, catch the corn, get whatever is clogging the opening and your back in business. It beats laying the feeder down and dumping which is hard to do by yourself.

We keep a broom handle handy. Take the lid off and use it to clean out the funnel. Ram it down through the corn. Works well

Properly cleaned deer corn shouldn't have dust that collects and clogs upon integration with moisture. We use two different cleaners in our process and its incredible what is removed from the time its harvested in the field until it goes into the bag. Don't waste your money on dirty corn.

We have had pieces of corn cob in bags a few years ago. You can't bust it up. Like MoTex said drained it out the bottom and pulled the chunks out and put it back in the feeder.

Always buy twice cleaned corn. It's more expensive up front, but cheaper in the long run.

You don't have to pay extra for twice cleaned corn if you buy corn from a large feed dealer. They have a great grain/seed cleaner. Places down south like Lyssy & Eckels, Mumme's, Morales, Bee County Coop, Leopold, etc all do high volumes of corn that is very clean and at a price that is cheaper than bagged corn from a retail market place or convenience store. I paid $5.75/50 lb bag of corn at McCoys of all places in Beeville. It was from Bee County Coop. Best price around me and really clean/new crop corn. No bugs or trash in either. Their store is in a location that has a lot of hunters driving buy and buying feed pen or fence or lumber material for their ranch or lease.

I have had pieces of cob in the corn that is just barely bigger than the corn but big enough to clog the feeder. I finally got it out with one of those tools that has a small hook on the end. But it was a real pain.

Indian corn is the cleanest corn there is. And it makes the deer stay around longer than dirty corn.

The twice cleaned corn is not always the answer, has some that had a few range cubes in it that stopped up the world. Nothing but clean corn and cubes.
