That's as old as I would let him get.

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 03:09 PM

Appears as a midlle aged protein fed buck. I would put him at 4-5 but he could be a really healthy 3 yo as well, although likely not.

Unless you are looking at better prospects this year.... rifle

That feeder in the back must be full of double down! popcorn

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 03:14 PM

Cant make my mind up on how old I would GUESS he is. Nothing screams old, but he looks middle aged to mature to me. Lot of neck for this time of year seems to make a straight line down to his brisket. Kinda looks like he sits down on his front hooves a little, but again nothing screams old to me.

What are your thoughts?

Agreed. Not much sway in the back but he has a paunch. Does not stand out as old to me either.

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 03:25 PM

I'd call him 5 or 6. Outstanding whitetail.

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 03:38 PM

5.5 and he wouldn't get any older if he walked by my stand. Helluva buck!

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 03:55 PM

It's hard for me to say, but I'm thinking around 5 yrs old. These protein fed deer make it more difficult.

I'm almost certain nobody on our place is feeding DD and I'd have to guess Record Rack.

4-5 y/o, nice looking buck! (correct me if I'm wrong, but this time of year they wouldn't have the .5 or 1/2 year adder since they would be born in late spring or early summer, the .5 would be out into hunting season, right?)

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 05:09 PM

Nice buck for sure.

Do you use the half when someone ask you your age? grin

Looks like a mature management buck to me. Don't want those junky antlers in the herd. up

not any longer ... same age up until my next birthday, why rush it up

but seriously, this time of year, wouldn't it be 4 or 5 year old, not 4.5 or 5.5 year old? ... to get really technical, now would be more like 4.16666 to 4.25 when going decimal ...

Re: Age opinions - 08/24/16 10:07 PM

I try to drop the "and a half" until November, just me, no real science behind it. THe deer in the pic looks mature but I still see a lot of leg on him. When you look at a buck and your first thought is "dang he has short legs" that's an old buck, or a dwarf. He's standing funny but it looks like his rump still has a point. The top pic is the best shot of his neck, but he's obviously craning it so it could be shorter and thicker than it appears in that pic. I wouldn't feel bad either way, take him this year or let him go one more. He could be that perfect combination of old enough to kill and young enough to get killed.

Bout time somebody posted a pic of a buck I could droul over. That guy is definately in grad school. He's ready to gradiate to your wall buddy. good luck!

If that buck was on my place he'd be living on borrowed time.

Re: Age opinions - 08/25/16 03:03 AM

Mature buck. Sunken forehead, squatty and filled out. Once the testosterone kicks in after he sheds that velvet, he is going to morph into a bull. Good luck catching up with him.

Re: Age opinions - 08/25/16 03:23 AM

Mature buck. He looks a bit younger due to the summer photo and smaller neck. Look at the shoulders and brisket. rifle

Standing heavy on his feet I would say 6+ definitely a shooter. up

Very nice 4.5

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 04:40 PM

That buck is at least 6 and I would say more of a 7 yr old. He is crowding upper 160's to 170 mark also. I would not let him get any older when I saw him live and in color.

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:09 PM

I can't get over what living with a controlled herd where I know almost every buck has taught me about what I don't know about aging.

Since all bucks are born here and none are tagged I depend on antler charactoristics and physical appearance to know age.

You really can get to know bucks that you live with. And I have 3 mature bucks that I would charactorize as the same approximate age as this buck by body charactoristics. I know their ages aren't more than 4 and 5. But right now, with all the protein and green for a they are eating they look much older.

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:14 PM

Think I found a picture from two years ago of the same buck. Shorter right brow and reddish forehead. Same buck???

Posted By: redchevy

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:19 PM

Appears to be the same to me. Brows are also very similar. And the coloration on his neck/throat

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:19 PM

Iv never seen a deer add that much of a mainframe point that late in life but that looks very close to each other... that deer is a beast!
Posted By: Pitchfork Predator

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:20 PM

Yes I would say the same buck. If that is 2 years ago that would make him 6-7 IMO.

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:21 PM

Or is the G2 there and inline with the G3?
Posted By: redchevy

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:22 PM

If the top pic is from 2 years ago, that potentially puts it in a pizz poor rainfall time frame if I remember right no?
Posted By: titan2232

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 05:37 PM

For sure two years ago and the exact same feeder location.
Posted By: fouzman

Re: Age opinions - 08/30/16 07:05 PM

Definitely the same deer. I'm always conservative so I called him 5 or 6, originally. After looking at his photo from two years ago, I agree the deer is definitely 6 and maybe 7. I'd kill him ASAP.

Some guys on the lease elected to just pen in their protein feeders from the sheep. Personal preference.
