Feeder pen vs cow

We keep all of our feeders behind feeder fences; until last season that has worked fine. There are about 30 head of cattle out at our lease and one of the big girls has figured out how to wiggle herself over my 38" welded panel fence and get into my corn. Its the same cow every time. I've debated running a single strand of barbed wire around the top of the pen (3-4" above the top of the panel) but I don't want that to be a deference to the deer. I know that the adult deer can still easily get over a 42" fence but I worry that the fawns may have trouble. If the fawns can't get in and feed with momma, then the doe might be more likely to pass the feeder for a more accessible food source. Ideas/input please

I'd run an extra strand of wire, but make it to where when you're there on the weekends you can pull that strand down to make it flush with the panels.

Lift the panels up about 12" to 16" off the ground, and the deer can easily get under the fencing. Plus, it lifts the top up higher for the cows. I used to do this, and it works fine to keep the stubborn cattle out.

Raise the panels and some deer will go under and other will still jump them.

I would do this. I have used a top wire solar wire on a low three strand barbwire feed pen before. You might even be able to turn it off once your cow gets stung a couple times.

If you lift the panel hogs will go under as well.

Certain cattle figure out they can do something and nothing short of selling or butchering will stop them. Seen a few over the years that learned they could jump a fence, that was the end of them they always made a trip to the auction.

I had one cow that jumped the fence and would destroy the feeder.

I now hang my feeder with a boat winch/cable.

I had a lease where barbed wire would not stop one cow in particular. It started when I tossed a pumpkin in the pen. She wanted it. Then she enjoyed corn on the ground followed by knocking the feeder over. I fixed then fence but at that point she cared even less - she wanted more. Only took a couple times before the situation was remedied by moving the feeder to a new location. Hind sight being 20/20 I should have tried solar wire. Would have been real easy given she always tore down the same panel.

Exactly why I started using heavy 15' legs anchored with T-posts (winch). Thought about going to 18-20' but didn't need to. The cows would bump on them for a few days and give up/move on. Don't fence for cows anymore. Just tall enough they can't get to the spinner. Just fence off the feeders you don't want pigs at, done. Fought cows for years, no more problems after going high with heavy pipe. Don't go less than 15'.

I just have two strands of barbed wire around the feeder pen with my hog trap in the far corner. It has been successful for six years keeping cows out at this location. Then the land owner decided to get these smart white cows. These suckers get in all of the time. I caught this one fair and square, I think I should get to keep her.

2 X 4s attached from T post top to T post top worked at one pen we had that attracted particularly stubborn cows.

I hate cows!!

I have never had a problem once I switched from hog panels to full size cattle panels with cut-outs. On the other hand, I have had a few cows that were jumpers. The only solution is a road trip to the sale barn.

I had one cow that was a regular out on the highway. We would put her through the gate and look for the hole! The fence was pretty old and had a few loose spots and a few sags. We would work on a place that might possibly be a problem only to find her out on the road again a day or two later. One evening were went through the same old routine, ran her up the lane, put her through the gate and drove along the fence...finding nothing but needing to do SOMETHING. Found a place that was not bad but decided to work on it anyway. We hadn't got started good util here she came. She stopped to check us out, sniffed of the fence and over she went. Never even touched the ^^^^^^top wire. We loaded up our tools, drove her back up the lane, put her through the gate and put her in the cattle pens. The next morning she took a little ride. SHE GONE!

Funny how one smart animal can be such a problem.
