Whimp out or suck it up?

Whimp out or suck it up? - 12/27/15 07:42 PM
Drew a TPWD hunt on the Cross Bar ranch north of Amarillo. Rough country, no blinds and you have to pack your deer to the road. No ATVs Allowed. By rule you must stay on the ranch the entire hunt because they lock the gates behind you and then escort you out 3 days later. Looking at this forecast and knowing there will be a lot of snow on the ground I'm leaning toward whimping out. Your thoughts? Decent bucks been spotted there.

If don't want to go give a real man a chance. Just pm me, what day do I fly out? Can have stuff packed by noon tomorrow.

Great opportunity to learn to build a little igloo shelter.

If you have the right gear and clothing go for it.

I'd go for it. I would however pack my bolt cutters. I don't like the thought of being locked in under those conditions.

I would pack my best gear, extra diesel, and go for it.
But, Dave, you're old. I would hate to have to drive up there just to look for a Dave Popsicle.

This reminds me of my girlfriends daughter that whines after being in the blind for three hours. I told her she has to go hunt on my land in Wisconsin one winter where it's 20 below windchill, you are 15 ft up in the air in a stand, no blind, no cover, just leaned against a tree from an hour before sunrise till sunset. Suck it up and go on the hunt

Re: Whimp out or suck it up? - 12/27/15 08:31 PM
As others have said. If you have the right equipment then go for it. But if your winter gear is for south Texas, then yes, you can be a little sissy. I was going to use another word, but most likely would have gotten censored.

Good to know you'd head up the search party. I got cold weather gear and have hunted frozen conditions. Just never had any success under those conditions.

Game will be much easier to spot the first clear day you have with snow cover. Take a couple of pair of hiking boots and get after it.

If I had clothing and equipment for that kind of weather, I would go. I would be furious if I stayed home and got reports back on how good the hunting was.

So where do you stay at night?
My cold weather gear would barely past mustard for STX so there's not a chance I'd be out in that weather without a place to go to get warm.

So where do you stay at night?
Your options are tent camping or bring a trailer in. I'm bringing a small travel trailer assuming the roads will allow.

if you can make it with a trailer then by all means, get you a decoy sled and go

Then yes, if you can get a trailer in, I would go without a doubt. Go out for a couple hours at a time if that's all you can stand.

I don't know, that's just how I grew up hunting. I have never seen a blind until I can down here. Just a stand against a tree

you will be fine with a heated trailer with lots of blankets and food. Hunt long as you can then warm back up in the trailer.

Whitetail. They are pushing the mules out of the habitat on the ranch so they want them thinned out. Asking all hunters to take 2 does and a buck if you have the opportunity.

go for it! You can climb inside the trailer to warm up. Maybe the only opportunity you get to have a hunt like this.

I used to do things like that ... now I sit in my heated box blind seeing more deer probably. When you get as old as I am the real tricks of the trade is hunt in comfort or watch tv...rescues going on ..taking hunters out of danger ...if found at all...stiff as a board...wrapped up in frozen blankets...no gas in the car...frozen bolt cutters to their hands....phone frozen to their ear...
real excitement...
Go For IT !!!!!

As much as I don't like the cold, the heat is a lot worse. Like I always say, when it's cold, you can always add more layers of clothing. But when it's hot, you can only take off so much before you get arrested. If it were me, I'd take every bit of cold weather gear I own to hunt in, and a bottle of Jack Daniels to keep me warm after the guns are all put away and the campfire is blazing.
Good luck!

I would go for it with that forecast. They will be moving and easy to glass.
I would start out hunting the northern slopes of the draws and bowls.

Hunting is suppose to be fun, you have to decide if that sounds like fun. If I were younger, yea I'd probably do it. Now, probably not.

They should be hungry and moving. Get yourself one of those roll up plastic sleds to make packing easy and go for it. My favorite time to hunt in Idaho was after a big snow when it got clear.

Unless I'm in jail, no one is locking me in for 3 hours, much less 3 days with no opportunity to leave on my own accord.
Good luck if you go. Sounds like it has a chance to be a memorable time.

Whelp... a lot of planning and stressing for nothing. Hunts been called off. BLM Land Manager tested the roads today and buried his 4x4. Had to call a dozier in to pull him out. Ain't no way it'll dry up by Thursday enough to haul a trailer in.

Scratch that. Hunts back on! Another rancher that has better roads has given permission to come through his property to get to one of the units so looks like I am going!
