Good scare at 5am.

Good scare at 5am. - 12/16/15 02:02 PM

So I arrive at my blind at around 5 am. And when I open the door I saw my binoculars case on the ground. So I think hmmmmmm, odd. Then it hit me, somethings in here. Keep in mind it's pitch black, so I close the door and take my flash light out... Turn it on and slowly open the door and take a look inside.. To my surprise a big damn owl is sitting on my chair, so after almost having a heart attack and screaming oh f***, I had to hold the door open so the owl could get out. Scared the hell outta me. Thought it was pretty funny and wanted to share.

Try being in a blind up on a 15' tower and have an owl fly in one of the windows while you are in there. That'll wake you up.

I've never had an owl in my stand, but multiple times have opened the door up to a ringtail cat looking at me.

I did have a worse experience several years ago.. Had a snake come in the blind I was in... I screamed like a little girl and jumped on top of the bucket I was sitting on. Don't know what kind of snake it was but it got just as scared as I did and fell out the door. Lol.

I just cleaned out a nasty blind because of owls. My buddy learned that you don't throw a carpet riddled with owl dung into the wind with your mouth open lol!

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/17/15 09:29 PM

I remember being about 12 or 13, early 90s, walking to a new stand one morning with my dad in Hamilton...its dark and we are trying to keep flashlight usage low and walk past a **** ARMADILLO RATTLIN AROUND IN A HOLE RIGHT BY OUR FEET!

I can still see my dad high stepping through the pasture, leaving his 12 year old son to fend for himself. grin

its very rare that kids get to see their dads act like complete girls, and I have to say, the few times I saw it were almost always at the deer lease dodging man eating armadillos or fighting swarms of wasps.

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/18/15 10:38 PM

Not to hijack, but my cousin is the family big guy....scary as hell when he's mad. But my dad, cousin and I were making the rounds checked out blinds and I hopped in one that sat about eye level for him while him and my dad were outside the blind looking in. The blinds have rolls of tp in baggies in em and little trash cans and I noticed on of the tp baggies was torn open and the tp was pulled out and went into the trash can where a mouse had made him a pretty cool little nest. I grabbed the trash can and this mouse jumped straight out of the trash can, hit the floor of the blind and in one jump went out the door and landed a direct hit into my cousins face. I have never heard such a high pitched squeal come from such a big dude ever in my life, combined with the fast motion river dance he was doing it was something I dont think I will ever have the pleasure of watching ever again...

Have you even seen a little kid hurt themselves and they just have that pained look on their face for about 15 seconds, then they take the biggest breath ever and the scream at the top of our lungs? That was my dad and I....for about 5 minutes.

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/19/15 02:00 PM

Happened to me twice. Sitting a 2 man ladder stand. Had an owl fly right at my face with feet first. First time was by myself. 2nd time was with my son. I knew what was coming second time so just made sure my son didnt fall out of the stand. Lol. Owl finally flew off before getting to us both times.

Glad to see I am not the only one this has happened to! The only difference is that I got settled in to the blind and it's dark...here come 2 owls flying in to land in the Windows! Scared the heck out of me!

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/19/15 03:37 PM

First time hunting West Texas had a turkey roosted in the tripod I was climbing in. In the dark it does not matter what it is, the scare factor is still there.

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/20/15 12:26 AM

Drove all night to get to a buddies deer lease one night. We get there at about 3am. He takes me to a ground blind and said get some sleep when you wake up and start hunting. I left the door open and got as comfortable as I could get and fell asleep. About 10 minutes later I had a dog come into the blind with me. We did not bring a dog with us. When I woke I did not know it was a dog I just knew there was something hairy in the blind with me. I jumped up pulled my pistol and exited as fast as I could. Once outside I turned to fire and notice movement on both sides of me. It was at that time I realized they were dogs. No dogs were killed.

Re: Good scare at 5am. - 12/20/15 01:03 AM

I was on a lease a few years back where a young couple were sitting in an open tree stand during bow season.
The young lady had a braided ponytail sticking out from under her cap that extended down past her shoulders and I assume that the hawk that tried to carry it away thought it was some furry meal ready for the taking.
She escaped injury but was pretty badly shaken to say the least.
