Hunting the Fence Line

So you guys with a problem of hunting a fence. How close is to close. 200 yards, 100 50 10 yards. I have one step, its 100 yards from my neighbors fence. I can see coming off his place everyday. But I do not shoot deer on his side of the fence.

We have stands right on the fence line. Right where there are trails coming from them to us.

I hunt near a property boundary, down a pipeline right of way. It is the only place on the timber company lease that I can get to easily, due to physical issues. There is no one hunting the adjacent timber property, so there's no one for me to offend. We do have permission to cross the non-existent fence line to pursue wounded animals. In the past three seasons, we've never had to go more than about 20 yards into the property to get an animal.

The question really isn't what people here think of as an appropriate distance, it is more of what your neighbor thinks. If you talk to him, find out what he thinks and explain why your stand is where it is and you may find that he's not bothered by your location. Be sure you have permission to follow a wounded animal onto his land before you do and you'll likely be fine.

All I can say is too me this is too damn close. I noticed this opening weekend. I took the pic from my side of the fence. I have no idea if the other fence there is an internal one that he owns or if he is actually shooting along 2 fence lines. I called the GW, but he can't do anything unless the guy actually shoots across the fence. I haven't found his blind yet as it appears to be hidden on a hill on his property and I won't trespass. Only good thing, I've hunted this land for 9 years and his feeder is not where the deer are lmao My blinds and feeders are several hundred yards inside my property lines.

Earl If the guy shoots a deer and it runs on to your place. He calls you. Ask to retrieve the deer. what will you do.

Illegal? No.

Courteous to your hunting neighbors? NOT!

Ethics dictate only hunting in an area where you can legally retrieve whatever you shoot, in addition to who owns the deer-holding habitat. Otherwise, you're just trying to catch fish under another guy's boat.

If you hunt a fence line, you cannot cry foul when your neighbor puts up his own stand to cut off any deer moving towards your feeder.

My landowner would probably be the one that got called. Only thing you can ethically do, let him retrieve it. The land owners Uncle lives close by and could meet him. I wouldn't be a happy camper about it though that's for sure. Fortunately the deer don't travel thru the area he has this setup. There is a draw on the backside of this hill that his blind is located that funnels thru the oaks and feeds my stock tank and creek. The deer travel between my two feeder locations and food plot which is the opposite direction of where he's setup.

I can guarantee you though if he shot something it came from and is going back onto my hunting land. His field is mostly open as is the one on the other side of the fence there you see. Mine is not, heavily wooded with Oaks and Mesquite, 2 food plots, creek, and what is now a freaking lake. I've been considering doing exactly what Texas Dan mentioned. I have a old tower blind that I've been considering putting on this fence line...

Now if I were hunting and he shot and crossed onto the land to retrieve something without any notification, I have the GW in my cellphone

The discussion brings to mind the need to walk your fence lines once September rolls around, unless you feel comfortable your neighbors will keep you in the know.

And just as the case with those who have trouble finding where the fish are biting, don't be surprised if your neighbors sitting on a lease with little or no habitat, setup next to your boat soon after hearing you shoot.

As long as your bullets aren't crossing our fence, it's your land, do as you please.
