Wise County

Wise County - 11/23/15 04:03 PM

Anyone seeing much rut activity? I saw two does getting chased hard yesterday morning and thought it might be game time. Didn't see much after that though. Rattled for 3 hours from different spots and got no response.

In the evening I had 5 does show up about 5pm and thought it'd be game time. Instead, I watched them graze until dark and never look at the corn. Had one little buck come by and he paid no attention to them.

Hiked all over the back part of my property while working from spot to spot rattling and never jumped a doe with a buck. No pictures of bucks with does at any feeders so far this season.

Was it just a slow rut that petered out? Hunted 30 miles away mid last week and saw tons of chasing.

Just seems strange this year.

KennyLee, it was on yesterday at my place in SW Young County..I posted the story on here about the one I rattled/grunted/doe cann'd in and unfortunately missed on. Also, lots of really nice ones were hanging at the Clear Fork processing in Graham on my way out yesterday and the guy said a lot hunters were indicating they were rutting hard.

I have a few recent pictures of two or more bucks under the feeder at the same time. Not sure if it's over or if it has not started yet

Kenny, I have seen good chasing for 10 days! It is happening bud. Very few deer on corn and protein right now, maybe the last couple of freezes will make a difference. Food plots are getting hammered though and that is the only places I have seen decent bucks chasing does (since the does are there). I am out of town working and concerned the primary rut will be over by the time I get home this week, but that should put bucks in overdrive search mode.

Weather this week should be interesting. My roads are still so bad from the floods that I'll be limited in where I can hunt.

Was just surprised to see all those does and not have anything check them out. It's usually December before that happens. Granted, my place is so overgrown right now you could step on a deer before you saw it.

Hoping the weather doesn't match the forecast this week. Wishing I'd have put in some new blinds....

Well WC hunters.... What's the latest news on activity? I hunted 3 days straight and didn't see a deer one so I've taken a couple days off. No trail cam pics in about 3 weeks. How is everyone else doing?

Been real slow, watched a small 2.5 year old bed down in the oats as does where grazing. 2015 main rut has come and gone. Still think bucks will cruse picking up ones that where missed though.

Shut out last two evening hunts. Best rut activity I saw started Thanksgiving and lasted a week. Feeder activity slow last 3 days. Pretty young 9 eating hand thrown corn right now 40 yards from me. Only movement I've seen in the rain.

Been every evening for about a week. Does and yearlings. Two bucks but they stay out on the fringes of the brush. Yesterday nothing. Nada, zip, zilch.

Things changed 10 minutes after I made that post. From then until 9:45 I saw 9 bucks and all were chasing hard on one doe. My neighbor was 900 yards from me and saw the same thing. Saw 5 mature bucks and pulled the trigger on an old heavy bodied 10. Before I got out of the stand, the 10 I've been chasing all year walked out at 15 yards and slowly walked the 100 yards to the feeder.

Maybe the best hunt from an action standpoint I've seen. There was a line at the processor with others reporting the same.

If you slept in to stay dry this morning you really missed out. What a day!
