Young County this weekend,

Young County this weekend, - 11/16/15 12:04 AM

Made the trip to the SW corner of Young County this week end. The deer just did not cooperate at all. The camera says they are hitting the feeder between 12-0200 and again around 5. They don't stay long almost like a hit and run. Did get to see a couple of young bucks and then late Saturday evening this buck showed up but he stayed at around 150 yards in the tree line. Had some Pics of him and I was glad to see him in person even if it was at a distance. Here's a couple of pics from this past week. Hopefully he sticks around.

Rebel, good buck there...Think I'm out pretty close to you near Murray and Murray Circle Rd...You're out by Miller Bend Rd., right? The tall racks are pretty prevalent out our way from my 8 years of being out there, unfortunately so is lots of the nocturnal activity. Try rattling if you haven't already done so, it's worked for me before out there..Good luck and some of us need to get together for some lunch maybe at Hole n the Wall some weekend coming up...

I rattled... I grunted and he just wasn't budging from the trees. He is by far the biggest deer we have pics of. We have several pics of young 8's that are legal but they will get a pass. I'm right off 209 from 3109. I wont be able to go back to the lease for another two weeks, but I'm always up for lunch. I like the café in Eliasville.

I hunt the Jack/Young county line. I saw very little movement this past weekend. Hope I am not missing the rut but who knows. That is a very nice buck I hope you tag him, I just wish I could see one like that (even on camera) at my lease.

I used to hunt out that way right on the Young/Throckmorton county line a little east of Woodson.

Bucks like that really hang tight to the post oaks and bull mesquite thickets. I had the best luck rattling, and hunting tree stands off major travel routes in the bull mesquite and sitting up against the trunk of a post oak off trails that were used to feed on the white oak acorns which they love.

It's very rare after the season starts they will come to the feeders in day light.

RAB, don't you know...The great tease, a good number of really good bucks on cameras, largely at night...Rattling for me has paid off in the past but they have to be in the "fighting" mode for it to pay dividends. Have to believe a lot of places within 2 hours or so of metromess also deal with the "nocturnal" issues as well. More hunting pressure tends to do that to animals.

At least a couple of you guys hunt within 5 miles or less of me as the Crow flys. I hunt one area off 3109 and another off Macabee. Bucks where we hunt have always been mostly nocturnal except for the peak of the rut. Hunting pressure around us, including some poaching has gotten very bad in the last 10 years too which has not helped. We have a lot of bottom land, so get covered with Hogs and Turkey more-so than Deer. I shot two hogs and a turkey opening weekend as we were not seeing any deer on the game cams at the feeders, and the acorns were dropping like the rain, but deer were starting to hit my food plot when I was there last. I'll be out there after em next few days hoping this cool weather gets the bucks moving around more looking for does. This should be a good weekend for us Young County hunters.

Guys, think most of you all saw my thread Heartbroken, Dejected and Elated in SW Young county. After my Dad's passing this past Wed., I took the opportunity to get after it. Anyhow, rattled a really good one, 130-140" class on my place about 8AM Sunday morning. Unfortunately I didn't hit him so he lived to walk again at least until someone else gets him. Anyhow, I'd say the mature ones are ready to go, hit the rattling, grunting and doe can when you're able to. On another note, I had only one buck on camera for the week prior to rattling him up..

We are back off the road, but you can see our Christmas lights from 3109. You? Neighbors on all sides of us have been hunting all week. I would not be surprised if there were other THF members around us.

I just take Macabee road every now & again, & always wondered who's deer camp that was on the road. There should be great deer hunting in that area. I know some guys just east of 3109 & Macabee, they always had good deer.

Re: Young County this weekend, - 11/26/15 11:19 PM

That would be our neighbors to the west with a camp on the road. We are in a house off the road. I hunt some land east of 3109 also. I paddle a canoe to the back of my stand sometimes. I have had poaching issues with two different neighbors, the coyotes have got bad, the drought years hurt, and more places in the area are leased with too many hunters. The deer population on our place is the worst its been in 20 years. But I did play cat and mouse with a really nice buck chasing two does this week so some do make it. It was the 2nd biggest buck I have seen out there. But it is mostly a hog and turkey lease these days.

I suppose that describes the area perfectly.
