Deer in poor condition?

We had a rough 75-90 days in Mills County after the end of June, but conditions before then were outstanding. However, we've already taken one doe (dry) that was very poor, we've seen a couple of other deer that look really bony, and we've talked to others seeing the same thing and even some death loss. Is this a worm issue or something else? Is anyone else in central Texas seeing similar issues?

we're just north of G'waite. Does look about normal. Lots of yearling's, above normal for us. I haven't stopped by the locker plant to see what is being brought in. We are heading back down this weekend. If we get into town, I'll ask around.

San Saba here and these are some of the fattest deer I've seen in a long time. Last weekend a 175 lb buck with no teeth left was shot along with a 105 lb doe. Plenty of fat on both deer, no lack of hitting the dinner table for either of them or any of the rest I've seen.

I hunt just west of Goldthwaite. I've noticed one doe running around that looks pretty thin. Other than that, everything looks fine. I shot a buck during bow season that had a crazy amount of fat on him. I would say the herd looks ok where I'm hunting.

How old yal think the doe was?

We have a couple does that hang around and never seem to get shot that always look poor, even in the wetest of years standing between a free choice protein feeder and a corn feeder they will have hips and ribs poking out some. They are just old.

I believe this was a younger doe. I think her fawn had worn her out during the summer.

That's probably a good question. I bet my dad didn't tooth her, but usually you can spot one that's older and he didn't say much about it. I had a yearling forkhorn that was the same way, though. I watched him for about 15 minutes before he rambled off and he appeared structurally sound but was definitely poor.

You can take in fecal samples to a local vet who will run egg counts in them to see if you have an internal parasite issue. What does the hair coat look like on those deer compared to the ones in better body condition?

Maybe chronic wasting disease?

Their hair is definitely not as slick or as dark as the healthier-looking deer. If I see/take any during Thanksgiving, STX, I'll check the stools and see what I see or drop some at our vet.

If you can get stool samples from those poor or thin deer that would be better. Talk to your Vet about what he charges and how he wants you to handle them. Normal stools should look like pellets or clumped groups of pellets. If they do not look normal then you might have a problem with parasites. Does the hair around the rearend look normal or have runny matted stool on it like a cow on wheat?

I didn't see any of them having notable squirts, no.

We have one doe that keeps coming up to the feeder that looks really thin, you can see her ribs in the cam pics. All others look healthy though
