Opening weekend - 10/05/15 12:42 AM
Haven't bow hunted since 1997. Was easily convinced to start again. I am shooting a barnet crossbow I traded a go pro for from a THF member. Headed south out of Ozona Friday night and wham hit a small 8 with the truck and need 2000 in repairs. No worries still driveable and airbags didn't deploy.
Saturday morning in the pop-up at 6:15. At 6:45 I can hear deer walking by in the rocks. At 7:15 the feeder goes off and I can hear more deer. I have a wide 8 and a mature ten at the feeder. Trying to decide if the 10 was one of my target bucks just couldn't tell. At 7:35 I hear another deer and all of the deer stop and looking in that direction and start moving a little. The deer is a buck and walks 15 yards in front of me headed to the feeder ears pulled back ready for a fight. The other 4 bucks move out of his way as he comes up to the feeder.
I am blown away by his mass and when I see his right main beam I go holy cow its mcnasty a targeted buck. I thought I was 25 yards from the feeder. So I range him expecting 25-27 yards and see 35 I do it again and it's 43 do it 4 more times and it is jumping 35 to 43. I get my arms steady and get 34.5. Now I am ready get settled in behind the crossbow I talk myself thru my practice and adjust the aim for 35 yards, click the safety slowly so not to be loud now I am ready. I squeeze the trigger and wham I hit him. He runs off and I hear him crash.
So I sit back breath a big sigh and am excited. Now I have no cell signal no satellite phone just a walkie talkie and don't think anybody will be able to hear. About 10 minutes go by and I hear deer coming back in. So after a bit I go to the feeder and start looking for blood. I can't find my bolt and no blood, no biggie I will start going the direction he went. Hear a spot there a spot and I follow his trail for 20 yards and I step on his hoof! Holy cow biggest whitetail of my life and with a crossbow.
